Set OBS to send a keyframe every 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds; its error guidance specifically tells creators to change the encoder to 2 seconds. This is an encoder setting, not a reason to buy a camera, capture card, or router.
What the warning means
YouTube’s error message, “Your encoder is sending keyframes too often or not often enough,” points to the timing of keyframes in the video stream. A keyframe—also called an I-frame—provides a reference image from which later video frames can be decoded. If keyframes arrive too far apart, YouTube says the stream may buffer. The target in YouTube’s guidance is one keyframe every 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings and keyframe error guidance give these recommendations.
Set the OBS keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- Open OBS’s streaming output settings. The specific labels can vary with OBS version and output configuration. An older OBS Project forum answer points users using Advanced Output to the keyframe interval setting. That 2017 community post is a location hint, not current official OBS documentation.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2. The value is in seconds in the cited OBS community guidance. If your current output offers an option to enforce streaming-service encoder settings, enabling it may let OBS apply the interval automatically; confirm what your version actually displays.
- Check frame rate against the time interval. At 30 frames per second, a 2-second interval corresponds to 60 frames. If you change the frame rate, preserve the same two-second timing rather than keeping a fixed frame count that changes the interval.
- Run a representative test stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement. Watch stream health and any messages in Live Control Room before the real broadcast.
- If the warning remains, inspect the delivered stream. Recheck OBS’s output mode and encoder settings, then read the specific Live Control Room message. YouTube notes ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so the displayed OBS value alone does not prove that YouTube received the intended interval.
What Indian creators should know
YouTube’s published keyframe recommendation is general encoder guidance; it is not presented as a separate India-specific requirement. The warning therefore calls for checking encoder timing, not assuming that a particular Indian network condition or location changes the keyframe setting. Test from the setup and connection you will use for the broadcast, and use YouTube’s stream-health messages to diagnose delivery problems.
Common checks if it still fails
- The setting is missing or ignored: Confirm which OBS output mode is active and inspect the encoder settings for that mode. The available controls can differ by configuration.
- You changed frame rate: Recalculate the frame interval so keyframes still arrive every 2 seconds. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames.
- OBS displays 2 seconds but YouTube still warns: Check Live Control Room’s exact message and stream health. Ingestion errors can affect the GOP size YouTube observes.
- You were considering new hardware: This warning alone does not establish a need for a new camera, capture card, router, or encoder; first correct and test the encoder setting.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different need—keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud after you upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not fix an OBS keyframe configuration or broadcast a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
