YouTube Live Says Keyframe Frequency Is Too High: Fix It in FFmpeg

Set FFmpeg’s GOP to about two seconds for your output frame rate, keep it closed, and verify the result in YouTube stream health.

If YouTube Live reports “keyframe frequency is too high,” configure your FFmpeg video encoder to produce a regular keyframe about every two seconds. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120. For libx264 at 30 fps, -g 60 is a suitable starting example. Keep the GOP closed, then test the stream and check YouTube’s stream-health message.

What the warning means

YouTube’s error guidance says, “Your encoder is sending keyframes too often or not often enough.” The warning can refer to an interval that is too short or too long, so check the exact wording in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming every keyframe warning has the same cause. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube’s live encoder settings and live streaming error messages describe the interval guidance and error context.

Calculate the GOP size for your frame rate

For a fixed two-second interval, multiply the output frame rate by two. Use the frame rate you are actually sending to YouTube, not just the source file’s frame rate. If your command changes the frame rate, recalculate the GOP size to match.

Output frame rate GOP size for about 2 seconds
30 fps 60 frames
60 fps 120 frames

These are interval calculations, not separate YouTube limits. YouTube’s error guidance gives 60 frames at 30 fps as its two-second example; its live settings recommend two seconds and a maximum of four seconds.

Set a regular keyframe interval in FFmpeg

For libx264 at 30 fps

In an existing FFmpeg command that uses the libx264 encoder and outputs 30 fps, add or adjust the video options to include -g 60. For example:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This illustrates the GOP setting; it is not a complete, universally tested command. Replace the input and RTMP address with your own values, and retain the ingest address and audio options appropriate to your setup. The example assumes a 30 fps output. At 60 fps, the corresponding two-second GOP is 120 frames, so use -g 120 instead.

Check the selected encoder’s options

FFmpeg’s -g option sets the maximum GOP size, but available controls and their behavior depend on the selected encoder and build. Check what your installed encoder supports with:

ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264

Replace libx264 with the encoder name in your command if you use a different one. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes GOP controls, including g, libx264’s keyint and keyint_min, and closed-GOP behavior. Do not assume an option intended for one encoder works identically with another.

Keep the GOP closed

YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. FFmpeg documents -cgop as enabling closed GOP; its negation disables closed GOP and enables open GOP. Avoid the disabling form for this use case. Exact controls depend on your encoder and FFmpeg version, so inspect that encoder’s help rather than adding a flag blindly.

Do not force keyframes as the first fix

A regular fixed GOP is the direct setting to check for this warning. -force_key_frames is not usually needed to correct it; if the configured GOP does not produce the expected output, first verify the encoder, frame rate, and encoder-specific options.

Test the fix and diagnose a persistent warning

  1. Confirm which video encoder your command selects and check its available options with ffmpeg -h encoder=<encoder>.
  2. Confirm the output frame rate, then set a GOP interval of about two seconds: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps.
  3. Check that the chosen encoder is configured for closed-GOP output using the controls supported by that encoder.
  4. Run a pre-stream test and inspect YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
  5. If the warning remains, check whether the exact message says keyframes are too frequent or not frequent enough, and verify that a frame-rate change has not left the GOP size unchanged.

YouTube also notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes. If your encoder settings appear correct but YouTube still reports the warning, the configured values alone may not explain the output YouTube is receiving. Use the current stream-health details to distinguish that case from a clearly too-short or too-long interval.

Keep unrelated stream settings separate

A keyframe-frequency warning does not by itself show that your bitrate, resolution, codec, or network settings are wrong. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends CBR. Change those settings only if YouTube reports a separate issue or your stream requirements call for it; do not treat them as substitutes for correcting the GOP interval.
