YouTube Live Says “Insufficient Video Data” in OBS: Troubleshooting Checklist

YouTube’s insufficient-video-data warning can point to network delivery, OBS performance, or output settings. Use OBS Statistics and YouTube stream health to find the right troubleshooting branch.

If YouTube says it is receiving insufficient video data while you stream from OBS, the warning does not tell you the cause by itself. First compare YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health with OBS Statistics: network-dropped frames point to delivery trouble, while rendering or encoding lag points to local OBS performance. Then verify the output settings and test again before changing several things at once.

What the warning means—and what it does not

“Insufficient video data” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not define that exact phrase as a specific fault, and the wording shown can vary by interface or language. A stream may be sending data inconsistently because of the network path, struggling to render or encode on the computer, or using output settings that need checking. Do not assume the bitrate is necessarily too low.

Use the two dashboards to identify which branch to investigate: YouTube Live Control Room shows stream health and its accompanying messages; OBS Statistics separates network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. Record what each reports during the same test.

Diagnose the failure before changing settings

  1. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note the stream-health status and any messages. Record whether the stream starts, stalls, disconnects, or stays live with degraded health.
  2. Check OBS Statistics during the attempt. Look separately for network-dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. An “encoding overloaded” warning or choppy preview/output points toward local performance; dropped frames or transmission instability point toward the network path.
  3. Write down the output configuration. Record resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, encoder, keyframe interval, and whether OBS sends directly to YouTube or through a relay or multistream service.
  4. Change one relevant variable and retest. Use a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, then compare the same OBS and YouTube indicators. Avoid changing network, encoder, and quality settings together, because that obscures which change helped.

Check whether the network can sustain the stream

A peak upload-speed result is not the same as a stable connection at the configured stream bitrate. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection and testing upload bitrate. Run an upload test, assess consistency as well as the peak, and avoid other uploads or transfers saturating the connection during a stream test.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation

YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes the following H.264 examples. They are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them; consult YouTube’s live table for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

If the connection cannot reliably support the configured output, lower the bitrate or output quality and test again. Use YouTube’s recommendations for your actual codec and output rather than applying one figure to every setup.

Test the path from OBS to YouTube

  • If Wi-Fi instability is plausible, try a wired Ethernet connection where practical. This is a network-path test, not a remedy for encoding overload or incorrect output settings.
  • For multistreaming or a relay, account for every outgoing feed when assessing upload capacity. Check whether the relay receives a healthy feed as well as whether OBS reports drops. A relayed setup adds another point to inspect; it does not establish the cause by itself.

Check OBS rendering and encoding performance

If OBS reports encoding overload, encoding lag, rendering lag, or choppy preview/output, reduce the work the computer must do. These steps address local rendering or encoding pressure; they do not increase upload capacity.

  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps.
  • Limit a game’s frame rate or graphics settings, and close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
  • Simplify demanding scenes and sources. Reduce expensive capture, media, or browser sources, filters, and unnecessary scene complexity.

Make one change at a time and check OBS Statistics again. If local lag improves but YouTube still reports poor health alongside network drops, continue with the network branch rather than assuming the local adjustment resolved everything.

Verify YouTube ingest settings

Compare OBS’s output settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance for the encoder and stream workflow you actually use. YouTube lists RTMPS as its recommended protocol and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 among its video codecs. Codec availability depends on what your encoder and workflow support; bitrate recommendations are codec-specific.

  • Bitrate encoding: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe frequency: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation.
  • Bitrate: use YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your connection can sustain the output reliably.

YouTube recommends testing before an event with representative audio and video movement, then monitoring stream health during the event. A static test image or unusually light scene may not reveal problems that appear with normal motion or audio.

Troubleshoot by the symptom you observe

What you see Where to investigate Next step
OBS Statistics shows network-dropped frames or transmission instability Connection, available upload capacity, competing transfers, or relay path Test upload stability, remove competing upload traffic, compare bitrate with YouTube’s guidance, and test wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi seems unstable.
OBS shows rendering lag, encoding lag, or “encoding overloaded” Local GPU/rendering/encoding workload Reduce resolution or frame rate, try 30 fps instead of 60, limit game load, and simplify demanding scenes or sources.
YouTube reports poor stream health, but OBS indicators do not clearly identify a branch Output configuration and the full delivery path Record the settings and messages, verify protocol/codec/CBR/keyframe interval, and repeat a representative test while monitoring both services.
OBS sends through a relay or multistream service Both the OBS-to-relay feed and the relay’s onward delivery Include all outgoing feeds in upload-capacity planning and check whether the relay receives a healthy feed; isolate the direct or relayed path if your workflow allows.

Reduce the chance of a repeat during a documentary stream

Long-form playback can make intermittent delivery problems especially disruptive. Before scheduling or starting a screening, run a representative test with the actual scene, playback sources, audio, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm YouTube stream health and OBS Statistics during the test, not only that the preview looks correct.

Keep a short record of the last known-good output configuration and the OBS/YouTube indicators from each test. If a problem recurs, export or capture the OBS log using the procedure available in your installed OBS version, and retain the YouTube messages and timestamps. These details make it easier to distinguish a repeated network problem from local performance or configuration trouble.
