To remove silence or setup time from an existing YouTube Live replay, open the video in YouTube Studio on a computer and use Editor → Trim & cut. Use the edge handles for dead air at the beginning or end; choose New cut for a pause inside the broadcast. Back up the replay before saving: YouTube says that, as of June 2025, saved Editor changes can no longer be undone with the former “Revert to original” feature.
Before editing: confirm the replay exists and make a backup
First check that the live broadcast is available as a replay in YouTube Studio. Replays are not guaranteed for very long streams: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive of live streams. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Remove dead air from the existing replay
- Open the replay on a computer. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, and open the live replay you want to edit.
- Open the editor. Select Editor, then choose Trim & cut.
- Choose the type of edit. For silence at the start or end, drag the blue selection handles so the retained section includes the footage you want to keep. For a pause inside the broadcast, select New cut, position the red box over the section to remove, and confirm the cut.
- Set times if needed. Use the timestamp fields to specify the beginning and end of a cut precisely. Check that the selected interval covers only the dead air you intend to remove.
- Preview, then save. Review the edited video before saving. Save only if the preview shows the right footage retained and the pause removed.
YouTube says trimming can remove material from the beginning, middle, or end of a video on a computer. For eligible edits, the existing video keeps its URL, views, and comments. YouTube Help: Trim your videos
Check duration and eligibility before relying on Trim & cut
- Duration: YouTube documents the trim feature for videos shorter than six hours. If the replay is six hours or longer, the documented workflow may not be available for it.
- Views and monetization status: For unedited videos with more than 100,000 views, channels outside the YouTube Partner Program may be unable to save changes, except for face blurring. Check whether this restriction applies before doing detailed editing.
- Replay availability: A stream longer than 12 hours may not have been captured as a replay. Confirm the video exists before planning an edit; keep a local archive for future broadcasts.
- Irreversibility: Since the former revert option is unavailable as of June 2025, retain an original copy and inspect every cut in preview.
Trim the replay, make a highlight, or publish a clip?

If Studio cannot make the edit
If the replay is too long for the documented trim feature or Studio will not let you save, download the video, edit the copy in a video editor, then upload the result as a new video. This is a fallback, not an in-place replacement: YouTube does not let you replace an uploaded video, and the new upload receives a new URL. YouTube Help: Replace or delete your video
Keep the original replay or downloaded backup until you have checked the new upload. Updating a description or linking viewers to the replacement may help direct them, but the old video’s URL and engagement do not transfer to the new upload.
