YouTube Live Playlist Streaming vs. OBS for a Church’s Prerecorded Sermons

A channel playlist organizes videos but does not broadcast them live. Compare uploads and Premieres with an OBS encoder workflow for scheduled church sermon streams.

A YouTube playlist is not a live broadcast. For one finished sermon, upload it as a regular video or schedule a Premiere if you want an event-style first viewing. To send prerecorded sermons as a scheduled YouTube Live event, use an encoder such as OBS: YouTube creates and manages the event, while OBS plays the local video files and sends the live feed. That feed is live as an encoder broadcast, but the sermon itself remains prerecorded.

What “playlist streaming” means on YouTube

A channel playlist groups published videos so viewers can watch them in sequence. It does not, by itself, create a scheduled live event or broadcast those videos as a live stream. YouTube Studio can schedule an upcoming live event with a shareable page, and viewers may be offered a reminder; an encoder is used to supply the event’s video feed. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings and creating a live stream with an encoder.

That distinction matters for churches: a playlist is useful for organizing sermons already on the channel, but it is not a substitute for an encoder workflow when the goal is to present prerecorded material inside a scheduled live event.

Choose the format that fits the service

Church’s need Best-fit approach What to expect
One completed sermon, with no live production elements Upload as a regular video; use a Premiere if an event-style first viewing is wanted No encoder is needed just to replay an already-uploaded sermon. A Premiere and a live stream are different formats; check the current Studio options and moderation needs before choosing.
A scheduled event page and a feed containing a local sermon file Schedule a YouTube Live event and send it through OBS OBS plays the local file and transmits the encoder feed to the event. The event is an encoder broadcast, not a live performance of the prerecorded sermon.
Welcome, slides, clips, scene changes, or a live host alongside the sermon Scheduled YouTube Live event with OBS OBS can compose scenes and sources before sending the feed; an operator needs to control and supervise the production.
Several local prerecorded items in one broadcast OBS with its VLC Video source VLC must be installed. OBS documents playlist loop and shuffle controls; rehearse order, audio, transitions, and how playback ends.
Videos already published on the church channel, arranged for later viewing YouTube channel playlist It organizes published videos for viewing; it does not itself send them out as a live broadcast.

YouTube describes scheduled streams, reminders, encoder setup, and live-event controls in its live stream settings guidance. For churches choosing between the approaches, the deciding questions are whether the material is local or already uploaded, whether overlays or live segments are needed, whether an upcoming event page matters, and whether someone can supervise the encoder.

Set up a prerecorded sermon as a YouTube Live event with OBS

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning the event.
  2. Create the event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and schedule the stream if you want an upcoming event page to share. Review the event settings, visibility, and any available reminder options. YouTube’s settings guide and encoder guide explain the workflow.
  3. Build an OBS scene for a single local sermon. In OBS, add a Media Source and select the sermon file. Check the source’s loop option and its behavior at the end of playback; OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
  4. Build a local-file playlist when needed. For a sequence of sermons, clips, or other local files, add OBS’s VLC Video source. Install VLC first, then confirm the playlist order and whether loop or shuffle is intended. Rehearse the transition between files and what happens when playback reaches the end. The OBS documentation describes these playlist options.
  5. Connect OBS to the scheduled event. Set OBS to stream to YouTube, or copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “You’ll create a stream key in YouTube, and then enter it into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it can use it to send an encoder feed. YouTube explains stream keys and event setup in its settings guide; for a protected connection, see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  6. Run a complete test before the service. Use a private or unlisted test event and check OBS’s preview, aspect ratio, audio level and routing, overlays, scene changes, event link, and exact end-of-file behavior. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the preview, audio, and video in its streaming tips and live streaming tips.
  7. Start the encoder early on broadcast day. Confirm the event preview is receiving the right picture and sound before starting the scheduled event in Live Control Room, unless you have deliberately configured auto-start. YouTube recommends starting encoders before the event; see its encoder instructions.
  8. End cleanly and review the replay. End the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; after the event, review the resulting replay and its visibility settings. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Prepare the sermon and protect the event

  • Confirm you have the rights to everything in the broadcast. Check the sermon recording, music, clips, photographs, and any other included material before streaming. The cited workflow guides explain how to schedule and transmit a stream; they do not establish that a church has permission to rebroadcast third-party material. Obtain appropriate permission or use material you are authorized to broadcast.
  • Do not treat prerecorded material as exempt from YouTube’s rules. Scheduling a video as a live encoder feed does not change who owns its contents or establish that it complies with YouTube policies. Review the current rules that apply to the channel and content before broadcast.
  • Keep the stream key private. Store it only in the encoder and authorized accounts. If it is exposed or used unexpectedly, replace it through YouTube’s live settings and reconnect OBS with the new key.
  • Rehearse the whole run, not only the opening frame. Check the sermon’s audio from beginning to end, any silence or black frames between files, scene changes, and the event’s ending. A successful preview at the start does not verify the rest of a playlist.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The channel cannot start a live stream The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements or may have a live-streaming restriction Check verification and restriction status against YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
The scheduled event shows no incoming feed OBS may be stopped or connected with the wrong stream URL or key Compare the encoder details in OBS with the current event’s Live Control Room settings; keep the key private.
The preview has picture but no sound The media source may not be routed or audible in OBS, or the wrong audio source may be selected Check OBS audio meters and monitoring/routing, then replay the test file and verify sound in the YouTube preview.
A playlist stops, repeats unexpectedly, or plays in the wrong order Loop, shuffle, file order, or end-of-playback behavior may not match the intended service Inspect the VLC Video source playlist controls and rehearse the full sequence before the event.
The event starts late or the preview is not ready The encoder was started too close to the scheduled start, or the event-to-encoder connection has not been checked Start OBS early, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and begin only after verifying picture and audio.
The replay is missing or has unexpected visibility The event may not have ended as intended, or archive/visibility settings may differ from expectations End the event in YouTube, then inspect the replay and its visibility. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours.

When a cloud playout service makes sense

OBS is the hands-on choice when a church needs scene control, overlays, a live host, or other production elements and has someone to supervise the encoder. For a recurring unattended YouTube channel that loops uploaded sermons, a cloud service is a different option: it can keep the uploaded material streaming without leaving a computer running at the church. That is not the same as using YouTube’s ordinary channel playlist as a live broadcast.

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the material from the cloud. Its offer is most relevant when the church wants unattended, continuous playback rather than OBS scene production.
