Yes. You can stream a video stored on a NAS to YouTube Live by making the file available to FFmpeg, looping and pacing it, and sending the encoded feed to YouTube with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. FFmpeg can run on a separate computer that reads a mounted NAS share, or on the NAS itself if its operating system, hardware, and FFmpeg installation support the job.

Choose where FFmpeg will run

“Streaming from a NAS” can describe two different setups. The NAS can be storage only, with another computer running FFmpeg, or it can store the video and run FFmpeg itself. The right choice depends on the NAS model and operating system, available FFmpeg build and package or container support, CPU capacity, network path, and ability to keep a process running. There is no universal NAS installation procedure; confirm those details for your device before installing or configuring anything.

Architecture What happens What to check
FFmpeg on another computer The computer reads the video through a mounted NAS share and sends the stream to YouTube. Confirm the share stays mounted and readable, the computer can encode the selected output, and its internet connection can sustain the upload.
FFmpeg on the NAS The NAS reads its local file and runs the encoder process itself. Confirm FFmpeg is available for that NAS OS, the CPU can encode the chosen format, and the system supports persistent processes and safe key storage.

If you need NAS-specific installation or restart commands, first identify the NAS model, operating system, and whether FFmpeg will run on the device or another host. A NAS share is not itself a streaming encoder.

Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and locate its stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event or channel.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to select the lock icon in the Stream settings URL field to reveal the RTMPS URL, then use that URL with the stream key in the encoder.

  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in shared scripts, logs, or shell history. If someone else obtains it, reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Use the exact URL and key YouTube provides; do not assume an ingest address is interchangeable between events or accounts.

Make the NAS video available to FFmpeg

Before starting the encoder, confirm the file path is accessible from the environment where FFmpeg will execute. For a separate computer, mount the NAS share and use the mounted file path. For FFmpeg running on the NAS, use the path as seen by that NAS process or container. Container paths can differ from paths visible in the NAS interface, so verify the mount inside the container if applicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that the file exists at the path FFmpeg will use and that the process has permission to read it.
  • Keep the NAS, host, or mounted share available for the entire stream; a disconnected share or sleeping storage can interrupt input.
  • Use a source file and output settings compatible with the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current encoder requirements.

Loop the video and send it to YouTube

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 loops indefinitely, while 0 disables looping. Place it before the corresponding -i. For a file input, -re reads at the media’s native frame rate; it is useful for pacing a file for live output, but it cannot make an unreliable storage path, encoder, or internet connection reliable.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"

  -f flv "[YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL]/[stream key]"

This is a command shape, not a complete encoding recipe: the mapping and encoding options depend on the source, desired output, and installed FFmpeg build. Replace the path with the real file path and the ingest URL and key with the values from Live Control Room. Never substitute a real key into a command you plan to publish or share. Check the documentation or help for your installed FFmpeg version; online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly, and current trunk documentation may differ from an older NAS package.

Choose encoder settings for the source and connection

YouTube’s currently surfaced encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe frequency is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table rather than treating one setting as universal.

For one specific H.264 example, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate. That is a setting for that codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a target for every stream. Choose a rate the internet upload connection can sustain, and allow capacity for normal network variation.

Start the stream and verify it in YouTube

  1. Start FFmpeg and confirm it can read the file and connect to the ingest URL. Watch its output for input, encoding, or connection errors.

Copyright, reused content, and long-running broadcasts

Looping a file technically repeats its playback; it does not grant rights to the video or music in it. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, including any music and other third-party material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for the content and channel before starting. A repetitive or reused program may also raise monetization questions that are separate from whether FFmpeg can deliver it; looping does not guarantee eligibility.

An infinite FFmpeg input loop is not a guarantee of a 24/7 broadcast. The encoder process, NAS path, host, network connection, and YouTube event can each stop or fail independently. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a longer stream will be archived. For a long-running deployment, configure process supervision and restart behavior for the specific NAS or host, then test recovery rather than assuming -stream_loop -1 handles it.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Practical check or fix
FFmpeg cannot open the input Path, share mount, permissions, or container mapping. Confirm the exact path from the FFmpeg process’s environment, that the share is mounted, and that the process can read the file.
The stream does not connect Ingest URL, stream key, network access, or encoder output format. Re-copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the selected RTMPS URL, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
Preview is missing or unhealthy Encoding compatibility, bitrate, keyframes, input pacing, or uplink capacity. Compare codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance; check whether the connection can sustain the configured rate.
The video works but audio is absent or wrong Audio stream mapping, source audio, or output codec. Check whether the input contains an audio stream and whether the command maps and encodes it in a format supported by YouTube.
The broadcast stops after running for a while Process exit, lost NAS access, host sleep or restart, network interruption, or YouTube event state. Inspect the process and logs, confirm the file remains reachable, and implement platform-specific supervision and recovery. The infinite loop option only repeats the input while FFmpeg continues to run.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the uploaded video to keep looping on YouTube without maintaining an FFmpeg process on your NAS or computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a live camera. It plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
