If a looping video looks stretched, cropped, or boxed in during YouTube Live, check the video file, the encoder’s canvas and output, and the preview—in that order. For a conventional horizontal stream, use a 16:9 composition such as 1920×1080, keep the pixels square, and fit the video to the canvas without stretching it or baking in bars. For a vertical broadcast, compose deliberately for 9:16 instead.
Why the loop can look wrong
The shape of the video is its aspect ratio: for example, 16:9 is a wide frame and 9:16 is a tall one. YouTube’s standard aspect ratio for computer playback is 16:9, but its player adapts to the source video’s ratio. A vertical, square, or otherwise non-16:9 source may therefore display in a player shape that differs from a conventional horizontal video; that alone does not prove YouTube has distorted it. YouTube Help explains player sizing and aspect ratios.
A loop can be altered at three different stages: the video file may already be cropped or padded; the streaming encoder may place it incorrectly on its canvas or send a differently shaped output; or the player and layout may be showing the intended source ratio in a way you did not expect. Diagnose each stage rather than changing resolution at random.
Fix the mismatch step by step
- Inspect the actual loop file. Check its dimensions and whether it is landscape, portrait, or square. Watch the file itself and look for a cropped subject, blank margins, or bars already embedded in the image. If its framing is wrong, correct the source or how it is placed in the streaming scene before changing the output resolution.
- Choose the intended composition. For a conventional horizontal presentation, use a 16:9 canvas and output. YouTube’s documented 16:9 examples include 1920×1080 and 1280×720. Match the output to the intended canvas and composition; changing resolution alone will not repair a source that is stretched or placed badly. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
- Check the encoder’s pixel aspect ratio and fit. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies square pixels. In the encoder, inspect the source placement, canvas dimensions, output dimensions, and pixel aspect ratio. Fit or crop the source intentionally within the canvas; do not stretch it to fill a different shape. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes the relevant live-stream settings.
- Review the Live Control Room preview before going public. YouTube detects the encoder’s chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health while testing, and compare what the encoder sends with the intended layout. If the preview itself is wrong, revisit the source placement and output rather than assuming viewers’ devices will correct it. See YouTube’s live encoder recommendations and Manage live stream settings.
- If you intend to stream vertically, configure a vertical layout. Treat 9:16 as its own composition, with important subjects and text positioned for a tall frame. YouTube documents vertical Live layout choices including center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. If using a third-party encoder workflow for both horizontal and vertical formats, make sure each intended output is sent to its corresponding stream key, then inspect each layout in its own preview. YouTube’s horizontal and vertical Live guidance describes these options.
- Remove baked-in bars or padding when they are the patch, not the intended content. YouTube advises against adding black bars or blank padding directly to a video to force a particular player shape; this can interfere with dynamic player sizing. Fix the source framing or encoder canvas instead. YouTube explains why hard-coded padding can cause problems.
Choose horizontal or vertical based on the viewing experience
Use 16:9 for a conventional wide presentation suited to computer and TV playback. Choose 9:16 when you are deliberately making a vertical Live experience, including for the Shorts feed. If you plan to provide both formats, check that each composition keeps the subject safely framed: a center crop can cut off material near the sides, while fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts present the image differently. Review each output in the preview intended for that layout. YouTube documents the available vertical layout choices in its vertical Live guidance.

Common symptoms and what to check
- People or objects look unnaturally wide or narrow: check that the encoder is not stretching the source and that its pixel aspect ratio is square.
- The image is cut off: compare the source’s framing with the canvas, then check whether a crop or vertical center-crop layout is intentional.
- Bars appear at the sides or top and bottom: determine whether they are part of the source file or produced by fitting one aspect ratio inside another. Do not add more baked-in bars as a general fix; adjust source placement or the canvas.
- The encoder preview looks right but the player looks different: compare the player’s shape with the source ratio and the selected horizontal or vertical viewing layout. YouTube adapts its player to the source, so a different player shape is not by itself evidence of distortion.
- The stream uses the wrong shape after enabling vertical Live: confirm that the vertical layout is intentional and that the encoder sends the intended format to its corresponding stream key; then inspect the vertical preview.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the loop is ready and you would rather not leave a computer running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
