Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your YouTube Live stream looks pixelated at 1080p, first check the encoder’s actual codec and frame rate. YouTube’s recommended live video bitrate for H.264 is 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), it is 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. Then verify CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a stable upload connection. “1080p” alone does not determine the right bitrate.
Use the live bitrate for the codec and frame rate you are sending
The figures below are YouTube’s live video ingestion settings, from its live encoder settings table, retrieved in 2026. They are not recommendations for encoding a video upload.
| Live resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Check the output settings in your encoder rather than relying on the project or source-video settings: confirm whether it is sending H.264, H.265, or AV1, and whether the stream is 30 or 60 fps. Compare its configured video bitrate with the matching row. YouTube describes minimums as well as recommendations; a minimum is not the target to choose when you are trying to improve picture quality.
Check rate control, keyframes, and delivery protocol
- Rate control: Set bitrate mode to constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube lists for live encoder settings.
- Keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Choose it if your encoder and configuration support it.
- Stream key: Make sure the encoder is using the key associated with the intended YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password and address combined; do not publish or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it in the YouTube Live Control Room settings.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs in its encoder settings. Available choices depend on your encoder and setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream
A configured bitrate only helps if the outgoing connection can deliver it reliably. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and testing before going live. Run a representative test using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you plan to use, with movement and audio similar to the actual programme. During the test and live broadcast, check YouTube’s stream health and any messages in Live Control Room.
- Run an upload speed test and check whether the connection can sustain the chosen video bitrate consistently.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream with the intended encoder settings and representative movement and sound.
- Watch stream health and encoder messages for interruptions or delivery problems.
- If the connection is unstable at the selected settings, lower the demand—for example, reduce frame rate or step down from 1080p to 720p—then test again.
The suggested step down is practical troubleshooting based on YouTube’s advice to choose a stream quality that can be delivered reliably over the available connection. If the problem appears specific to Wi-Fi reliability, testing with a wired connection can help isolate the cause; it is not a guaranteed fix for pixelation.

Find out whether the encoder feed or viewer playback is the problem
Pixelation can come from an encoder bitrate that is low for its frame rate and the amount of motion, or from an unstable or insufficient upload connection. Check the encoder output and incoming stream health first. If those look sound, compare playback on another device or network: YouTube transcodes incoming live video into different formats for viewers, and their playback rendition and connection affect what they see. An encoder setting does not guarantee that every viewer receives the same rendition.
For documentaries, fast pans, busy scenes, fine detail, and movement can make compression artifacts more noticeable. A useful test should include the kind of footage the programme actually contains rather than only a static title card.

Do not confuse live settings with upload-video settings
YouTube’s separate upload encoding recommendations list 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. Those are for uploaded videos, not live ingestion. For a YouTube Live stream, use the live table above.
