Set OBS’s YouTube Live keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. A low-end PC does not change this requirement: if the computer struggles, reduce the stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to settings it can sustain instead of lengthening the keyframe interval.
Set the keyframe interval in OBS
- Open Settings → Output in OBS.
- If the streaming encoder controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Under the streaming encoder settings, find Keyframe Interval or the equivalent control for your selected encoder. Set it to 2 seconds if the field uses seconds.
- If the encoder asks for a number of frames instead, use frame rate × 2: enter 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Apply the settings, start a test stream, and check YouTube’s stream health while showing representative motion and audio.
OBS labels and controls can vary by version, output mode, and encoder. YouTube’s stated guidance is: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends 2 seconds; its live streaming error guidance explains that at 30 fps this means a keyframe every 60 frames.
Why a low-end PC should not use a longer interval
The keyframe interval is a stream-format setting for YouTube ingestion, not a way to reduce the workload on a slow computer. Keep it at 2 seconds. To make streaming reliable, tune the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to what both the PC and its actual upload connection can sustain.
There is no single ideal resolution, encoder, or bitrate for every low-end Indian PC: the processor, graphics hardware, encoder support, connection quality, and content all matter. Run a speed test, leave headroom rather than targeting the full measured upload rate, and test with the kind of movement and audio the stream will actually contain. A separate recording encoder also uses additional resources, so avoid adding simultaneous recording unless the PC can handle it.

Choose a stream quality the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s published figures below are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or network can deliver a stable stream. The H.264 figures are YouTube’s current guidance; the other codec values are included for comparison. Encoder availability depends on the selected hardware and software.

For YouTube Live, its encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding. For SDR it specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Choose a codec your encoder supports and a bitrate that remains stable under real network conditions; lowering resolution or frame rate may be preferable to dropping frames or disconnecting.

Check stream health and troubleshoot problems
- YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe frequency: verify the encoder’s interval is 2 seconds. If it is expressed in frames, check the calculation for the configured frame rate; at 30 fps it is 60 frames.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the PC and connection can deliver consistently. Re-test during representative motion and check YouTube’s stream-health indicator.
- The encoder is overloaded: try an encoder available to your hardware that it can handle reliably, reduce output demands, and disable a separate recording workload if you enabled one.
- The keyframe field is missing: check whether OBS is in Advanced output mode and inspect the settings for the selected streaming encoder. Available controls and wording vary by OBS version and encoder.
- The stream fails after changing codec or transport: confirm the chosen encoder and YouTube ingest configuration support the selected codec and RTMP/RTMPS workflow; use the stream-health messages to identify the reported issue.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that a closed GOP is required. If an error specifically identifies GOP structure, check the selected encoder’s documentation and settings rather than changing the interval beyond YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
