If your video source delivers 30 frames per second (fps), set your encoder’s output to 30 fps unless your production deliberately converts the footage to another frame rate. YouTube accepts live streams up to 60 fps, but that limit is not a reason to force a 30 fps source to stream at 60 fps. Check the source and encoder output separately, then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
Why is a 30 fps video streaming at 60 fps?
The source frame rate and the encoder’s output frame rate are separate settings. A camera, capture source, or video file may supply 30 distinct frames per second while the encoder is configured to send a 60 fps output. What the encoder then does with that mismatch—such as repeating, interpolating, dropping, or retiming frames—depends on the software; YouTube’s general live-stream guidance does not specify that behavior for individual encoders.
YouTube supports live input at up to 60 fps and normally detects the resolution and frame rate chosen by the encoder. The 60 fps figure is a supported maximum, not a recommendation to set every source to 60 fps. For a fixed 30 fps source with no intended conversion, configure a 30 fps encoder output.
How to fix the mismatch
- Confirm the source rate. Check the camera, capture source, or media file and verify that it actually supplies 30 fps. Do not assume the encoder’s output setting describes the source.
- Check the encoder’s output separately. Find its video or output frame-rate control and select 30 fps if the source is 30 fps and you do not intend to convert it. Menu names and conversion behavior vary by encoder; YouTube’s general documentation does not define settings for OBS or other third-party software.
- Review YouTube’s stream configuration. YouTube detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to choose a resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. This setting concerns resolution; check the encoder itself for its output frame rate.
- Test before the event. Send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and messages, and monitor stream health while testing and during the live event.
- Confirm what the encoder sends. If the preview still appears to be 60 fps, verify the encoder’s actual output and consult its documentation for how it handles a 30-to-60 fps conversion. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish what a specific encoder does with mismatched rates.
When should you use 30 fps or 60 fps?
Choose based on the frames your source can provide and what your production needs—not on the maximum YouTube accepts. If the source is fixed at 30 fps and there is no planned conversion, match it at 30 fps. If your source can genuinely supply either rate, weigh the motion smoothness you need against encoder capacity and the sustained upload bitrate available to you. YouTube’s settings guidance gives bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate, but does not make a universal perceptual judgment about which rate will look better for every production.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a bitrate that matches the stream
YouTube recommends different H.264 bitrates depending on resolution and frame rate. These are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that an internet connection can sustain them. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing a reliable quality.
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | Not stated in the cited guidance | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | Not stated in the cited guidance | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
The figures are from YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Select the recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your sustained upload capacity can support the stream.

Check the rest of the stream if quality is poor
A frame-rate mismatch is not the only possible cause of a poor-looking or unstable stream. Follow the signal path to distinguish a source or encoder issue from a connection issue:
- If the video or audio already looks wrong in the encoder, check that the intended sources are routed correctly.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load; a struggling computer can affect the output.
- Check a local recording, if available, to see whether the problem is present before YouTube receives the stream.
- If the encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection and investigate whether it can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Use YouTube’s stream health messages and Live Control Room preview to help identify problems during a test or live event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded documentary or playlist live on YouTube 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option from configuring a local encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
