For a spare Intel PC running OBS, start with Intel Quick Sync H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then run a realistic test stream before relying on the setup. These are starting settings, not a guarantee: processor and graphics generations, drivers, OBS version, scene complexity, and upload capacity all affect the result.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for Quick Sync
For a standard SDR broadcast, use H.264 as the starting codec and match the bitrate to your output resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s live guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. It also specifies CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection will sustain the stream. Allow headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation, and verify stability with a test.
Advanced video and audio targets
YouTube’s recommended advanced H.264 settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit video; for audio, YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 128 Kbps. OBS’s available controls and labels can vary by version and encoder implementation, so set these where exposed rather than assuming every QSV interface presents every option.

Check that the spare PC can use Quick Sync
OBS documents Intel Quick Sync Video support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Intel Core-i processors from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) onward. OBS recommends generation 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV generations had lower encoding quality. This is a documented compatibility baseline, not a guarantee of good results on an untested machine. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Quick Sync depends on the processor’s integrated graphics being enabled. Intel notes that disabling processor graphics when a separate graphics card is installed can make Quick Sync unavailable. - Confirm the Intel processor has integrated graphics and that they are enabled in firmware.
- Install an appropriate Intel graphics driver for the operating system.
- Check whether OBS lists an Intel Quick Sync H.264 option for streaming.
- If the machine is older than Haswell, treat compatibility as especially uncertain and judge quality through an actual test.
Hardware encoding moves encoding work to a dedicated graphics component and can reduce CPU load, according to OBS. The trade-off is that older hardware encoders can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding. Whether QSV is the better choice on a particular spare PC depends on its generation, workload, and desired output.
Configure OBS and YouTube, then test
- Prepare the encoder. Enable Intel processor graphics in firmware if necessary and install the Intel graphics driver. Restart if the driver installer or system requires it.
- Select Quick Sync in OBS. In OBS’s output or streaming encoder settings, choose an Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoder if available. The exact menu path and labels depend on the OBS version and platform; OBS documents QSV on Windows and Linux for supported Intel graphics.
- Set the video output. Choose the intended resolution and frame rate, then set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to two seconds. Use the applicable YouTube H.264 bitrate from the table above. Keep the keyframe interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Set the audio and compatible advanced options. Choose AAC audio if available, with stereo at 128 Kbps as YouTube’s recommendation. Use the listed H.264 and SDR targets where OBS exposes them.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use YouTube’s live setup to obtain the stream key and configure OBS to send to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a recording or screenshot.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the intended scene, representative movement, and the actual audio chain. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and resolve warnings before a public broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
An encoder is useful when you need to combine a screen, gameplay, external audio or video, or a more complex production; those are possible uses, not extra equipment requirements for every stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at Get started with live streaming.

Choose a resolution your PC and connection can sustain
The highest available resolution is not automatically the best setting. A higher frame rate or resolution requires a suitable encoding workload and sustained upload capacity. Compare the desired output against YouTube’s bitrate recommendation, then test using your actual content. Documentary footage with slow shots may behave differently from fast-moving footage; titles, transitions, overlays, and multiple sources also add scene complexity.
- If the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding YouTube recommendation.
- If YouTube reports encoding or stream-health warnings during a representative test, fix those before scheduling an important broadcast.
- Do not treat YouTube’s minimum bitrate as a target for a high-motion stream; its recommendation is the better starting point when the connection can sustain it.
Troubleshoot common Quick Sync problems
Quick Sync does not appear in OBS
Confirm processor graphics are enabled in firmware, particularly if the PC has a separate graphics card; install or update the Intel graphics driver; then restart OBS. Check the processor generation against OBS’s documented QSV baseline. OBS version, operating system, driver, and hardware all affect availability.

The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor health
Compare the configured bitrate with measured, sustained upload capacity rather than a peak speed result. Close other upload-heavy tasks, test again, and lower resolution or frame rate if necessary. Make the test representative of the actual video movement and audio. The encoder recommendations do not account for the reader’s home network.
The stream looks soft or blocky
Check that OBS is sending the intended resolution and frame rate and that the bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for that output. If the connection is unstable, lowering resolution may produce a more dependable result than keeping a high setting with an inadequate bitrate. Older QSV generations may deliver lower quality than newer hardware or software encoding at the same bitrate.

Audio is missing or out of sync
Verify OBS is capturing the intended audio source and that the stream uses a supported format, such as AAC. Test audio alongside the video before going live; a video-only check will not expose routing, level, or synchronization problems.
Copyright and documentary footage
Having an encoder that works does not grant rights to the video or music being broadcast. Before streaming a documentary, confirm that you have the necessary rights or permission for the footage, soundtrack, and other included material. YouTube may detect copyrighted content in a live stream; platform eligibility, copyright enforcement, and monetization are separate from the encoder configuration. Check YouTube’s current rules and the rights applicable to your material before broadcasting.
