YouTube Live Drops Frames at 60 FPS but Not 30: Settings to Test

A clean 30 fps stream does not identify the cause of 60 fps drops. Use OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health errors to choose the right settings to test.

If your YouTube stream drops frames at 60 fps but runs cleanly at 30 fps, 60 fps is a clue—not a diagnosis. First check whether OBS reports network dropped frames or local rendering/encoding trouble, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for ingest errors. Those signals point to different fixes, so change one setting at a time.

Identify what is dropping frames

Run a representative test with motion and audio, as YouTube recommends. Compare OBS statistics during 30 fps and 60 fps tests while keeping the scene, resolution, encoder, game load, and network connection unchanged for the initial comparison. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages as well; its dashboard checks the incoming stream and displays configuration or ingest errors.

  • Network dropped frames rise: OBS says this indicates an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the outbound connection and stream load.
  • Rendering or encoding performance worsens: Look for local choppiness or an OBS encoding-overload warning. Investigate available GPU and encoding capacity.
  • YouTube reports a stream error: Check the listed codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe/GOP configuration against your encoder.

OBS separates connection problems from local performance problems in its connection troubleshooting and encoding performance troubleshooting guidance. A successful 30 fps test can reveal a workload threshold, but it does not by itself prove that the encoder is the bottleneck.

If OBS shows network dropped frames

Start with bitrate and connection stability, not an encoder preset change. OBS suggests keeping bitrate within stable upload capacity and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. That is OBS guidance, not a YouTube target; a speed test’s total throughput does not guarantee a stable route to YouTube ingestion. YouTube also recommends a speed test and lowering resolution if available bandwidth is insufficient. See OBS connection troubleshooting and YouTube’s encoder settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Lower bitrate only. Hold resolution and frame rate fixed, and stay within the applicable YouTube ingest guidance. If network drops decline, bitrate or route capacity may be involved.
  2. Reduce resolution while keeping 60 fps. This tests whether the overall stream load is too high for the connection while preserving 60 fps motion.
  3. Inspect the network path. OBS lists VPNs and network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, and faulty hardware as possible causes. Its examples of hardware include the modem, router, cables, network cards, switches, and extenders. If you suspect equipment, consult your ISP before replacing it.
  4. Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround. OBS says it can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it may reduce image quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue.

If local rendering or encoding performance worsens

When the network counter remains stable but local output becomes choppy or OBS reports encoding overload, reduce the work the game and OBS must do. OBS’s performance guide recommends freeing GPU resources and reducing output resolution or frame rate.

  1. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings to leave GPU capacity available.
  2. Close other GPU-heavy applications.
  3. Reduce OBS output resolution but retain 60 fps. This tests whether the resolution-related workload is the issue without first sacrificing frame rate.
  4. If the problem remains, test 30 fps. OBS recommends this when 60 fps is not working. If 30 fps stabilizes output, the 60 fps workload may exceed available rendering or encoding headroom in that particular scene and system load.
  5. Check the encoder output and local recording, and monitor CPU load. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder output and CPU load; if local output looks healthy but the outgoing stream does not, investigate the internet connection.

Dropping to 30 fps is a useful fallback and diagnostic test, not the only possible remedy. Lowering game load or output resolution may let you keep 60 fps.

Check YouTube ingest settings

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends CBR; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Match the stream resolution and frame rate to the encoder output. YouTube’s Live Control Room can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default; a custom stream key allows manual selection. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

For H.264, YouTube’s published ingest table gives these bitrate figures. They are recommendations for ingestion, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable:

Resolution and frame rate Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s current encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026. AV1 and H.265/HEVC have separate bitrate entries; do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs without checking their rows. YouTube says its recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

A two-second keyframe interval corresponds to 120 frames at 60 fps and 60 frames at 30 fps. If your encoder specifies keyframes as a frame count, update that value when you change frame rate so the interval remains two seconds. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance also notes that resolution mismatches, excessive frame rate, incorrect bitrate, or keyframe/GOP configuration can cause errors, and calls for a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

Choose the next test based on the signal

Signal Test What the test can tell you Trade-off or limit
Network dropped-frame counter rises Lower bitrate, then test lower resolution while retaining 60 fps Whether the connection can sustain a lighter stream Lower bitrate or resolution can reduce image quality or detail; it does not identify every network fault.
Rendering/encoding overload or local choppiness Free GPU capacity, reduce game load or output resolution, then compare 60 fps with 30 fps Whether local workload is limiting output 30 fps is less temporally smooth; lowering game load or output resolution may preserve 60 fps.
YouTube Live Control Room shows an ingest/configuration error Correct the indicated codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or frame rate Whether the incoming stream matches YouTube’s expected configuration A valid ingest configuration cannot fix local overload or an unstable network route.
