YouTube Live Cue Points: How to Set Up Mid-Roll Ads and Monetize Streams

“Cue points” on YouTube Live means mid-roll ad placement. Learn the native controls, timing options, encoder setup and monetization caveats.

To set a “cue point” on YouTube Live, choose when to place a mid-roll ad in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube calls these mid-roll ads, not cue points. You can let YouTube place them automatically, schedule breaks at set intervals, or insert them manually; a Stream Deck is optional.

What “cue points” mean on YouTube Live

Creators often use “cue point” to mean the moment an ad break should begin. YouTube’s documented feature is mid-roll ads: ad opportunities during a live stream. A cue or ad slot does not guarantee that an ad will actually run. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to fill a slot, and viewers continue watching if no ad is served. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the available controls and serving caveats.

Choose an ad-break approach

Turn on monetization for the live stream, then choose a mid-roll approach in Live Control Room. The right setting depends on whether you value less hands-on operation or more control over timing.

Approach How it works Trade-off
Automatic YouTube places mid-roll opportunities based on its recommendations. Less manual timing work. YouTube recommends this approach; ad delivery is still not guaranteed.
Scheduled Set breaks for every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. Gives a predictable cadence, but YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic placement.
Manual Insert a mid-roll from Live Control Room when you decide the timing is suitable. Most direct creator control, but no mid-rolls are served if you do not insert any. YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic placement.

These are ad opportunities, not guaranteed interruptions or revenue. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically on when a monetized channel turns on stream monetization. Live-stream ad revenue and replay revenue can be reviewed in YouTube Analytics with the Live filter. YouTube also says ads are turned off for an embedded live player with autoplay.

Set up and start an encoder-based stream

You do not need an encoder or a physical control device just to insert mid-rolls: manual ad controls are available in Live Control Room. An encoder is useful for productions involving screen sharing, gameplay, external audio or video equipment, or other advanced setups. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and streaming tips.

  1. Enable live streaming. Verify your channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Requirements and availability can change; consult YouTube’s live-stream eligibility information.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream in the Stream tab, or schedule one in Manage. Scheduling lets you promote the event and viewers can set reminders.
  3. Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s server and key fields. The key is a credential: do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. YouTube describes stream settings in its stream management guide.
  4. Send the preview, then go live. Start the encoder and wait for its preview in Live Control Room. Check picture and sound before selecting Go live. For scheduled events, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand.
  5. Check the viewer experience. Confirm the event appears on your channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and monitor sound and picture during the broadcast.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the stream in YouTube and the encoder when finished. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Insert or delay mid-rolls during the broadcast

Manual insertion in Live Control Room

For manual mode, use the mid-roll control in Live Control Room when you want to offer an ad break. There is no need to buy a Stream Deck. If you choose manual placement but do not insert breaks, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served.

Optional Stream Deck control

YouTube documents an Elgato Stream Deck plugin option for inserting ads. It can suit a creator who wants a physical desk control, but it adds hardware and plugin setup. Check current model and plugin compatibility before buying; Live Control Room remains the no-purchase option.

Protect an important segment

When automatic mid-rolls are enabled, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube describes a five-second countdown before they resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is enabled, so avoid manual insertion during a segment you intend to protect.

Taking a short break

Live Control Room also has a Take a Break control with an optional away slate for one, three, or five minutes. The break does not end automatically when its countdown reaches zero; end it in Live Control Room. If you use an away overlay with an encoder, it can be added as a browser source if that encoder supports it. The overlay does not mute audio sources, so mute your microphone before stepping away.

Other ways to earn from a live stream

Ads are not the only revenue path YouTube lists for live broadcasts. Depending on channel eligibility, creators can also use Super Chat and Super Stickers in Live Chat, and channel memberships. These features have eligibility requirements; check the current requirements in YouTube Studio rather than assuming every channel can enable them.

Copyright, reused content, and ad suitability

Monetization controls do not grant permission to use music, footage, or other material in a stream. Use content you own or are licensed to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before broadcasting. A live stream or its replay can face claims or other restrictions if it includes material you lack rights to use; an ad break does not resolve those issues. YouTube’s monetization feature availability also depends on channel eligibility.

For a practical pre-stream review, use the copyright safety checklist. It is a planning aid, not a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s policies.

Troubleshoot common cue-point problems

  • No mid-roll control appears: Confirm monetization is enabled for the live stream and check that the channel and feature are eligible. Interface labels and availability can change.
  • No ad plays after a cue: A slot is not guaranteed to be filled. Viewers continue watching when YouTube does not serve an ad.
  • No breaks appear in manual mode: Insert mid-rolls yourself in Live Control Room; manual mode does not serve them if you insert none.
  • An automatic break interrupts an important moment: Enable Delay ads before the segment. It delays automatic mid-rolls, but manually placed mid-rolls still display.
  • The preview does not appear: Check that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the current YouTube stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
  • Viewers hear audio during an away slate: The overlay does not mute audio. Mute the microphone and any other audio sources before leaving.
  • The stream does not end when an away countdown reaches zero: This is expected; end the break manually in Live Control Room.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream rather than operate a live production, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
