If your YouTube Live stream is unstable on a Jio 5G hotspot, lower the video resolution and encoder bitrate together, then test the stream over the actual hotspot. Start by trying H.264 at 480p30 and 4 Mbps; if YouTube still reports instability, lower the bitrate and retest. That is a test point, not a guaranteed Jio setting: a speed test is only a snapshot of upload capacity.
First, identify what “bitrate too high” means
An encoder warning can mean its configured bitrate is too demanding for the connection. Dropped frames or warnings in YouTube’s stream health can indicate that the stream is not arriving reliably. Check both the encoder’s configured output and YouTube’s stream health; a momentary upload-speed result alone cannot establish a sustainable bitrate.

Settings to try on a Jio 5G hotspot
Use YouTube’s H.264 recommendations as reference points, not as a promise that a particular Jio connection can sustain them. YouTube’s current settings table, accessed in 2026, lists:

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations and minimum table entries by codec and output setting, not observed speeds on Jio. A listed minimum is not the same as the recommended bitrate, and neither figure guarantees stable delivery over a mobile connection. Consult the YouTube encoder settings table for the full set of supported live settings.
A practical starting point
- Try H.264, 480p at 30 fps, with a 4 Mbps bitrate.
- If that test is unstable, reduce the encoder bitrate further and retest. You can also try 360p30; YouTube lists 4 Mbps as its H.264 recommendation for that output too, but your actual stable rate may be lower.
- Try 720p only if testing shows the connection can sustain it. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30 and 720p60 is 8 Mbps.
- If the link is marginal, reduce resolution or frame rate as well as bitrate. Lower resolution reduces detail; lower frame rate reduces motion smoothness.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video, and RTMP/RTMPS for streaming protocols. For H.264, use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Test the connection and tune the encoder
- Free up the connection. Pause other uploads and cloud backups on the streaming computer and devices sharing the phone’s connection. Then test again.
- Measure upload from the real setup. Run an upload speed test on the computer connected to the Jio hotspot, near the time and place you plan to stream. Repeat it if the results vary. YouTube recommends an upload speed test, but its result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained stream capacity.
- Lower resolution and bitrate. Set the encoder to H.264, 480p30, and 4 Mbps as an initial test. If the test stream remains unstable, lower the bitrate and retry; adjust resolution or frame rate down if necessary.
- Set CBR and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds.
- Test representative content. Before going live for an audience, run a test with motion and audio similar to the real broadcast. A static screen may not represent a video with frequent movement.
- Watch stream health. During the test and broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health indicators and respond to warnings by reducing output demand and checking the connection.
YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. In Live Control Room, the encoder must send the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use. Hotspot Wi-Fi trouble versus weak cellular upload
If the phone-to-computer Wi-Fi link is unstable
On Android, try USB tethering as an alternative way to share the phone’s connection with the computer. A compatible data cable may be needed. This only tests or changes the local link between phone and computer; USB tethering cannot increase the upload capacity available from the cellular network. See Android’s tethering instructions.

If cellular upload is weak or changing
Changing encoder settings cannot repair a weak or fluctuating mobile radio connection. Test at another time or location, and check your current plan and account eligibility directly with Jio. Jio’s mobile help and support page provides support pathways, but no universal Jio 5G hotspot bitrate or tethering cap is established here. Do not assume all plans handle tethered traffic identically.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
