Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a 1080p, 30 fps ambient stream, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps when sending AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for H.264. Set bitrate mode to CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Your upload connection must also have room for the stream: YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom.
Recommended bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s bitrate table is organized by the video YouTube receives—not by content type. It does not specify a separate setting for ambient, relaxation, or low-motion video. Use the recommendation for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec; these are YouTube’s general operating recommendations, not a measured ambient-video preset. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
At 1080p30, YouTube lists minimums of 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; those minimums are not the recommended targets. The table’s AV1/H.265 and H.264 columns are separate recommendations, so select the one matching the codec your encoder actually sends.
Choosing a codec and frame rate
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs. If you have a choice, consider both the recommended bitrate and whether your encoder supports the codec and RTMPS reliably. YouTube’s guidance does not quantify how much better one codec looks for ambient scenes.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the frame rate present in your source. A static or slowly changing scene usually has little reason to be encoded at 60 fps if its source is 30 fps; that is a practical content choice, not a YouTube-specific ambient preset. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream uses YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation, while 1080p30 AV1 or H.265 uses 10 Mbps.
Encoder settings that matter
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS. RTMP is also listed.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo, its advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth in YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
Check upload bandwidth before going live
The bitrate target only works if your connection can sustain it. YouTube says total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Test outbound upload speed under realistic conditions, then account for other streams, users, and network traffic sharing the connection. The relevant figure is available upload capacity while the stream is running, not just the advertised plan speed. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

For a single 1080p30 stream, start with the codec-specific recommendation in the table, then confirm the connection has the recommended margin. If you run multiple streams at once, include their combined bitrate when checking total upload use. If the connection cannot sustain the selected settings with headroom, lower the resolution or frame rate and choose the corresponding bitrate instead of simply accepting recurring upload congestion.
Configure and validate the stream
- Choose output resolution and frame rate. Match the source and the quality you want viewers to receive; for a slowly changing scene, do not add frame rate without a source or viewing reason.
- Choose the ingestion codec. Use the AV1/H.265 or H.264 column that matches the encoder output, then set the corresponding recommended bitrate.
- Set the remaining encoder options. Choose CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, supported audio settings, and RTMPS if available.
- Test the upload connection. Measure under realistic conditions and leave roughly 20% headroom after accounting for all traffic.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and video movement like the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health and encoder messages. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- For an all-day broadcast, record locally. Check that the local file is being written and growing; YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What changes when a stream runs for 24 hours
Automatic archives are not guaranteed
YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A single 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to create a complete YouTube replay. Keep a local recording if you need an archive. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

DVR rewind may be limited
For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. This is a viewer’s ability to seek backward during the live broadcast, separate from bitrate and separate from whether an archive is created. See YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams.
Monitor reliability rather than assuming it
YouTube’s computer streaming tips recommend checking local archive files, testing encoder failover, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. These practices can help you detect problems, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation. See YouTube Help: Tips for live streaming.

Troubleshooting common bitrate and stream problems
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check actual upload capacity, shared network use, and whether total stream bitrate exceeds available bandwidth. Restore the recommended headroom; if needed, move to a lower resolution or frame rate and its corresponding bitrate.
- The picture looks poor despite a stable connection: Confirm that the encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and table recommendation. Check that bitrate mode is CBR and the keyframe interval is two seconds, not longer than four.
- The encoder cannot use the selected codec or protocol: Choose a codec it supports from YouTube’s listed options and use RTMPS when supported. Match the bitrate to the codec actually being sent.
- The 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay: YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours. Use the local recording as the dependable copy, and verify that the file is growing during the broadcast.
- Viewers cannot rewind: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; bitrate changes do not resolve that duration-related limitation.
