For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube lists minimums of 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. The source being prerecorded does not change the recommended bitrate: match the setting to the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec.
Recommended bitrate and encoder settings
YouTube’s English live encoder guidance gives these figures for 720p at 30 fps. They are incoming bitrates for the stream sent to YouTube, not a guarantee that viewers will receive video at that bitrate; YouTube transcodes live streams into viewing formats. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists the following:
| Setting | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended video bitrate | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| Listed minimum video bitrate | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS | |
Choose a codec your encoder and YouTube stream configuration support. The minimums are lower listed values, not a substitute for testing: a stream that cannot consistently sustain its bitrate may have unstable or degraded video.
Does prerecorded video need a different bitrate?
No. “Prerecorded” describes the video source, not a separate YouTube Live ingest format. Use the 720p/30 fps row if that is the resolution and frame rate you send to YouTube, and select the bitrate for the codec actually used by the encoder. The video’s original file settings do not by themselves determine the outgoing live bitrate if your playback or streaming setup changes resolution, frame rate, or codec.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check upload capacity before going live
The stream must fit within your connection’s outbound capacity. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom; include the total bitrate of all outgoing streams when calculating capacity, including both primary and backup streams if you use them. Check upload speed rather than download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For example, an 8 Mbps H.264 stream needs more than 8 Mbps of reliable available upload capacity to preserve the recommended margin; other concurrent uploads reduce what is available to the stream. The exact connection needed depends on the total outbound traffic from your setup.

Set up and test the stream
- Set the output format. In your encoder, choose 1280 Ă— 720 at 30 fps if you intend to send 720p/30 fps to YouTube.
- Select the codec and bitrate. Use 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265, where supported. The encoder’s video bitrate setting is the relevant value.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Configure the YouTube ingest connection. Use the stream key and server details from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Check the network. Confirm available upload capacity for the full outgoing bitrate and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
- Run a representative test. Use footage with similar motion and audio to the planned broadcast, then review stream health and encoder messages in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before the stream and monitoring health while live: encoder settings and testing guidance.
YouTube can detect encoder settings automatically in Live Control Room. Manual resolution selection is associated with using a custom stream key and enabling manual settings; available controls may depend on your stream configuration. For encoder choices, YouTube describes both software applications and standalone hardware in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshooting bitrate and stream health
- Frequent dropped frames or unstable ingest: Check upload capacity and competing network traffic. Confirm the stream fits within available outbound bandwidth with headroom; lower the outgoing bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the recommended value, then test again.
- YouTube reports settings that do not match your plan: Verify the encoder’s actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval. Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec being sent, not merely the codec of the original recording.
- The picture looks soft despite using the recommended bitrate: Confirm the encoder is actually outputting 1280 Ă— 720 at 30 fps and that the source contains enough detail. The ingest bitrate alone does not guarantee a particular viewer-side quality because YouTube transcodes the stream.
- Manual resolution controls are unavailable: Check whether you are using a custom stream key and manual settings in Live Control Room. YouTube may detect encoder settings automatically.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded video to remain live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
