For a 720p60 YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube lists lower minimums—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1 or H.265—but those are not the recommended targets. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and make sure your upload connection can carry the entire stream with extra capacity.
Recommended bitrate for 720p60
YouTube’s live encoder guidance ties bitrate to the incoming resolution, frame rate, and codec. These figures are for video, not the complete stream payload.

These are YouTube’s published live encoder values, accessed 2026-10-03. Treat the minimum as a lower bound in the table, not as the target for a reliable stream. At the same 720p60 output, the recommended setting is codec-dependent: H.264 calls for 8 Mbps, while AV1 and H.265/HEVC call for 6 Mbps.
Settings to use in your encoder
- Resolution and frame rate: 1280 Ă— 720 at 60 fps.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS, as supported by your encoder and stream setup.
- SDR color, if applicable: Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth are listed in YouTube’s advanced settings guidance.
Apply the bitrate row for the codec actually sent to YouTube, not just the codec used to encode a source file. These are live-ingestion settings; do not substitute YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded video. The guidance reviewed does not specify a different bitrate table for gameplay or for playlists that present prerecorded clips as a live stream, so using the general 720p60 ingest table for those cases is an inference from YouTube’s resolution, frame-rate, and codec guidance.

How much upload speed do you need?
The video bitrate is only one part of the data sent. Audio and, if configured, a backup feed also use upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate being sent; shared network activity can further reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
- Choose the video bitrate for your codec: 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 720p60.
- Include audio and any simultaneous backup stream when estimating the total outgoing bitrate.
- Check your connection’s upload performance with a speed test. Download speed alone does not establish that the stream will fit.
- Leave the recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate and use a reliable connection. If other devices or applications are uploading, account for their traffic too.
A connection that measures exactly the recommended video bitrate is not enough to conclude that the stream has sufficient capacity: the encoder sends audio as well, and network availability can vary. YouTube advises reliability and headroom; it does not require Ethernet or specify a cable type. A wired connection is an optional way to connect, not a way to increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider.

Playlist streams, latency, and buffering
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not provide a special bitrate for a playlist-style stream. If it is sent at 720p60, use the normal live bitrate row for its ingest codec. The content being a gameplay playlist does not, by itself, establish a different bitrate requirement.
Latency means the time from capture at the encoder or camera until the stream appears for viewers. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Choose latency settings based on how much interaction matters and how much buffering your audience can tolerate; latency is not a reason to change the codec-specific bitrate values above.

DIY streaming setup and common problems
For a software encoder
In OBS or another encoder, set the output to 1280 × 720 at 60 fps, choose the codec you intend to send, and enter its recommended video bitrate in CBR mode. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Use YouTube’s stream setup to obtain the stream key, then enter it in the encoder’s service or streaming settings and start the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your live event.
YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output, but that does not make OBS or a capture card a requirement for choosing a 720p60 bitrate. Capture hardware is relevant only to a workflow that needs to bring a console’s video into an encoder.

If the stream is unstable or looks wrong
- Repeated buffering or dropped frames: confirm upload speed, reduce competing uploads, and check that total outgoing bitrate—including audio and any backup feed—fits with headroom.
- Bitrate below the recommended value: verify the selected codec and resolution. Do not confuse the listed minimum with the recommended target.
- Keyframe warning or ingest issue: set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and keep it at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Wrong settings for a prerecorded export: check live encoder guidance rather than applying upload recommendations for ordinary video files.
- Playlist content or rights concern: bitrate settings do not grant permission to use game footage, music, or other material. Check that you have the rights needed for the material and comply with YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright rules.
