Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your OBS bitrate fluctuates during a YouTube Live stream, first check OBS Stats: rising Dropped Frames (Network) usually points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain. Match your output to YouTube’s recommended settings, leave upload headroom, and reduce stream demands if needed. Dynamic bitrate can help during congestion, but it lowers picture quality rather than fixing the connection.
Identify what is actually fluctuating
Open OBS’s View → Stats while streaming or running a test. Do not treat every performance warning as a network problem: OBS tracks network-dropped frames separately from rendering lag and encoder overload.
- Dropped Frames (Network) rises: OBS is having difficulty delivering data to the remote ingest server, or the configured bitrate exceeds the capacity available to it. OBS says this is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
- Rendering lag or encoding overload rises: These are different from network-dropped frames. Investigate rendering or encoding performance rather than assuming the internet connection is at fault.
- OBS shows no network drops, but viewers report buffering: The issue may be on viewers’ networks or devices. A less demanding bitrate or resolution may make playback accessible to more people, with a potential loss of image detail. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide.
Record which counter changes and when. That distinction helps you avoid changing encoder settings to solve a connection issue—or troubleshooting the network when the problem is elsewhere.
Set OBS to match YouTube’s ingest recommendations
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolution guidance for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its published figures vary by output mode; there is no single bitrate that suits every 1080p stream. The figures below are from the YouTube Help table, which does not state a publication year, so check the live guide before changing a production setup.

| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate). Its guide also specifies supported ingestion codecs H.264, H.265, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds); and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm the applicable settings in YouTube’s live documentation, since recommendations can change.
In OBS, check the output codec, bitrate control, target bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval against the YouTube guidance for your chosen mode. Avoid copying another creator’s bitrate without checking whether their codec and output settings match yours.

Check whether your upload can sustain the stream
Measure upload capacity, not just download speed. Run a speed test more than once, including when the problem normally occurs, and consider the upload available during the actual stream rather than relying on a single peak result. A test is only a point-in-time sample.
YouTube says total outgoing bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Add the video and audio bitrate you intend to send. Treat that combined stream bitrate as the demand OBS must deliver.
- Compare it with upload capacity that remains available under realistic household or workplace use. Do not use the connection’s download result as a substitute.
- Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% margin and account for concurrent uploads, calls, backups, and other users.
- If available upload is inconsistent or too close to the stream’s demand, lower the target bitrate. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate and recheck the relevant YouTube recommendation.
Test a lower-demand configuration before going live
Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. Test with representative motion and audio, then watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream health messages during a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test. YouTube advises testing before a live event and monitoring stream health during it.
- Choose a YouTube-supported codec, resolution, and frame rate that fit the connection you measured.
- Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and select the matching recommended bitrate from YouTube’s current table.
- Run a test long enough to observe whether network-dropped frames increase under normal network use.
- If they do, lower bitrate and test again. If the bitrate is sustainable but the image is still too demanding for viewers, consider a lower resolution or frame rate.
A stable connection matters more than selecting the highest available output. A conservative setting that your connection can sustain is preferable to a nominally sharper stream that repeatedly loses data.

Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and hardware causes
If network-dropped frames continue despite a suitable bitrate, investigate the path between OBS and YouTube. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A standard Ethernet cable is a practical test if your computer can connect to the router; it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity or fix upstream congestion.
- Wi-Fi: Test over Ethernet if possible. If the problem disappears, the wireless link may be contributing instability.
- VPN: Temporarily test without it, where safe and permitted. A VPN can change the route used to reach the ingest server.
- Firewall or antivirus: Check whether security software is interfering with OBS’s connection; do not leave protective software disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Network optimization utilities: Look for bundled tools that prioritize or limit application traffic, and test whether OBS is being deprioritized.
- Drivers and network hardware: Check network-driver status and router or modem connectivity if symptoms persist across tests.
Make one change at a time and compare OBS statistics or logs. OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options are Windows-only in its troubleshooting guide. The guide also suggests reverting the IPv4-only option to its default if enabling it makes no difference. Avoid changing several network settings at once: it obscures which change affected the stream.

Use OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and, if available in your version, enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS describes this option as lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. It can reduce picture quality and does not resolve the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot fix the root cause, not as a guarantee of unchanged quality. The exact label may vary as OBS versions change.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network-dropped frames rise | Upload capacity, congestion, Wi-Fi, route, or network equipment | Compare total stream bitrate with sustained available upload, leave 20% headroom, then test Ethernet and other network causes. |
| Rendering lag or encoding overload rises without network drops | Rendering or encoding performance | Keep this separate from connection troubleshooting; the network-dropped-frame counter is not the same symptom. |
| OBS reports no network drops, but viewers buffer | Viewer networks or playback devices, or a stream quality too demanding for some viewers | Consider a more accessible bitrate or resolution, accepting the image-quality trade-off. |
| One speed test looks good but the stream still drops frames | Variable upload, busy-hour congestion, or competing use | Repeat tests under the conditions that cause the problem and compare with OBS statistics during a test stream. |
