If audio disappears between videos in a YouTube Live playlist, find where it drops out: listen to the playlist player, the encoder’s program output or local recording, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the player or encoder is already silent, investigate playback and audio routing. If local output stays audible but YouTube does not, check encoder settings, Live Control Room errors, and the connection.
Find where the audio disappears
The fault can be in the playlist source or later in the encoder-to-YouTube path. Comparing outputs helps isolate it without assuming a particular playlist app or encoder. YouTube does not document one universal setting that fixes gaps between playlist videos; the right fix depends on how your source and encoder are configured.
- Playlist player: Listen through a transition. If it goes silent here, focus on playback behavior or the files.
- Encoder output or local recording: If the player remains audible but this output drops, check whether the source stays in the outgoing mix at the transition.
- YouTube Live preview or recording: If the encoder’s local output is audible but YouTube’s is not, inspect encoder audio settings, dashboard errors, and the outbound connection.
Also note whether every transition fails or only transitions involving certain files. That observation can help narrow the fault, though YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a playlist-specific test.
Test the playlist and monitor the stream
- Run a test stream with several playlist transitions. Preview it in Live Control Room before relying on the setup for a public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring audio and video quality.
- Listen at each point in the signal path. Check the playlist player, then the encoder’s local program output or a local recording if available, and then the YouTube preview. YouTube recommends checking encoder sound and looking for problems in the local archive.
- Check the audio route as one video ends and the next starts. Confirm that the playlist player is part of the outgoing program mix and that the mix continues feeding the encoder across the transition. YouTube’s guidance covers source routing generally, not specific playlist-app controls.
- Review the Live Control Room for errors. YouTube lists ingestion problems such as no audio stream, multiple audio streams, unsupported audio codecs, and incorrect audio settings. Follow the error shown and use settings appropriate to your stream protocol.
- If local sound is clean, check encoder health and the connection. Look for encoder errors and high CPU load; if the local output remains healthy, check the outbound internet connection as well.
- Repeat the test and keep a local recording. Confirm that the same transitions stay audible both locally and in the YouTube preview or recording before depending on the stream.
What YouTube’s audio errors mean
YouTube Help’s “Live streaming error messages” includes the warning, “Your encoder is sending no audio.” YouTube notes that some encoders have a control to turn audio on and that its pipeline requires audio on all videos. If Live Control Room reports an audio error, treat that message as evidence about the stream reaching YouTube; separately compare the local output to see whether the silence also exists upstream.
