For a standard stereo YouTube Live stream, set OBS’s streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps. Also use AAC or MP3 audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. In OBS, open Settings → Output and make sure you change the streaming output—not just the recording setting. YouTube’s higher recommendation, 384 Kbps at 48 kHz, applies to 5.1 surround sound, not ordinary stereo. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives these recommendations; the help page does not state a publication year.
Set the correct OBS audio bitrate for your channel layout
The right value depends on whether your stream is stereo or 5.1 surround. Bitrate and sample rate are separate settings: Kbps measures encoded data per second, while kHz describes the audio sample rate.
| Audio layout | YouTube-recommended audio bitrate | Sample rate |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz |
Use the 5.1 values only if your stream is actually configured to send 5.1 audio. For RTMP or RTMPS delivery, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its live-stream error guidance.
Change the streaming setting in OBS
- Open Settings → Output. Find the audio bitrate control for streaming. OBS’s available controls depend on the selected output mode and version.
- Check which output mode is active. In Simple output mode, use the streaming audio bitrate control. In Advanced mode, confirm you are editing the streaming output settings and the active stream audio track. Advanced mode separates stream and recording controls, so a recording bitrate change alone will not fix the live stream.
- Set the bitrate for your layout. Use 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 only when sending 5.1. Set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Confirm the codec and route. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and verify that the intended audio source is active and routed to the stream.
- Test before the event. Use audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube advises testing both before going live; check stream health and messages during the test and event.
OBS’s streaming overview explains that Advanced output mode offers more control over stream and recording settings. Menu details may vary with OBS version and selected output mode.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If YouTube reports zero bitrate while OBS says 128 Kbps
A configured bitrate is not proof that YouTube is receiving audio at that rate. First verify that the stream output—not only recording—is set to 128 Kbps, then check that the active audio source is producing sound and routed to the track sent to YouTube. Confirm the codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and run a test while watching YouTube’s stream health.
Those checks are diagnostic steps, not a documented universal explanation for a zero-current-bitrate warning. YouTube’s guidance establishes the recommended bitrate and recommends monitoring stream health, but does not identify one specific OBS cause for every zero reading. If the warning remains, check the active track and source routing again, then test the stream configuration before the actual broadcast.

Distinguish a low audio bitrate from an upload-bandwidth problem
The audio bitrate setting controls the encoded audio track. Upload capacity affects the total stream—audio and video together. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That 20% applies to the total stream, not to the audio control.
If your connection cannot sustain the total stream bitrate, reduce video bitrate or resolution as needed while retaining the appropriate audio setting. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for the recommended audio parameters and its streaming tips for bandwidth planning.
