For YouTube live streaming, the right bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec. At 60 fps, YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for 1440p with AV1 or H.265, versus 34 Mbps with H.264; at 1080p60, it recommends 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, versus 17 Mbps with H.264. Choose the resolution your connection can sustain reliably: 1440p is not automatically better-looking for every source or viewer.
1440p vs. 1080p live bitrate recommendations
These are YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates, not upload-encoding settings. Codec and frame rate matter alongside resolution. YouTube’s guidance checked October 3, 2026, lists the following recommended and minimum values:
| Live resolution and frame rate | Codec | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | H.264 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | H.264 | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |

Which resolution should you choose?
Choose 1440p when the source and connection support it
1440p sends a higher-resolution live picture than 1080p, but at the same frame rate and codec YouTube recommends more ingest bandwidth. For example, at 60 fps the recommended AV1/H.265 bitrate is 24 Mbps at 1440p and 12 Mbps at 1080p; with H.264, it is 34 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. Prefer 1440p when the additional detail is useful for your material and your connection can sustain the applicable recommendation.

Choose 1080p when reliability matters more than extra resolution
1080p can be the more dependable choice when available upload bandwidth is limited or variable. A stable 1080p stream is preferable to a higher-resolution setting that repeatedly loses quality or drops. YouTube advises choosing a quality that will produce a reliable stream on your connection and running an upload speed test; its cited guidance does not specify one universal safety margin for all connections.
Keep frame rate and codec in the comparison
At either resolution, 60 fps has a higher recommended bitrate than 30 fps for the same codec. H.264 also has higher recommended figures than AV1 or H.265 in YouTube’s table for the combinations above. Check the codec your encoder actually sends before choosing a bitrate; do not compare 1440p60 with 1080p30 and attribute every difference to resolution.

Does 1440p look better to viewers?
It can deliver more source detail, but the bitrate table is a configuration guide, not a promise that 1440p will look better in every situation. Results also depend on the original picture, motion, encoding, viewer display, and playback connection. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so the viewer may not watch the stream at the ingest resolution.
For documentary footage, consider the material: fine textures, maps, archival images, or detailed landscapes may benefit from higher resolution when the original supports it. A mostly static talking-head stream may gain less. These are practical considerations, not guarantees about a particular encoder or viewer’s playback.

Set up the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR), with a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, its advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709. YouTube identifies H.265 as its recommended HDR codec and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in these settings. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the complete configuration guidance.
- Confirm the intended output. Set the encoder to the resolution and frame rate you plan to stream, then confirm the codec it will use.
- Set the bitrate from the matching row. Use the recommended figure for that exact resolution, frame rate, and codec in the table above.
- Configure rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use a supported transport and picture format. Prefer RTMPS. For SDR, use square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709; follow YouTube’s HDR guidance if streaming HDR.
- Run a representative test before going live. Include audio and movement similar to the planned program. Watch stream health and read any messages during the test and event.
Live ingest bitrate is not upload bitrate
Do not copy YouTube’s upload-encoding table when configuring a live encoder. For example, YouTube’s upload recommendations list 1440p at 16 Mbps for standard frame rates and 24 Mbps for high frame rates, and 1080p at 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps respectively. Those figures concern uploaded-video encoding, not live ingest. Use the live table above for a YouTube live stream. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations for upload settings.

Latency and audience interaction
Resolution and bitrate are separate from the latency choice in YouTube’s live settings. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube notes that it may increase playback buffering. If viewers need to respond in real time, weigh that trade-off against smooth playback; see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Troubleshoot a poor or unstable stream
Stream health shows interruptions or the picture degrades
- Check whether the chosen bitrate matches the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Run an upload speed test and select a quality your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube does not prescribe a single safety margin for every connection.
- Test again with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health and messages for specific warnings.
The stream looks softer than expected
- Confirm the outgoing resolution and codec rather than relying only on the encoder’s project or preview settings.
- Check what resolution is available in the viewer’s playback options. YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions.
- Compare like with like: keep frame rate and codec constant when assessing 1440p against 1080p.
Playback buffers while interaction feels delayed
Review the latency setting and decide whether faster interaction is worth the possibility of more buffering. YouTube’s guidance describes that trade-off but does not make one setting best for every audience.
