To add mid-roll ad cue points to a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, open the stream’s Edit > Monetization settings, turn monetization on, and choose automatic, scheduled, or manual ads. Manual breaks can be inserted in Live Control Room while you stream. A cue point gives YouTube an opportunity to show an ad; it does not guarantee an ad or earnings.
Before adding live ad breaks
Your channel must be eligible for monetization, and monetization must be enabled for the stream. To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form videos and live streams on the Watch Page, YouTube also requires acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Ads may be limited by ad-suitability policies.
YouTube’s interface labels and the location of settings can vary by locale and may change. If the steps below do not match your Studio view, check YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
Turn on monetization and choose an ad mode
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Choose Stream to start now or Manage to schedule a stream.
- Open the stream’s Edit > Monetization settings.
- Set monetization to On, then choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for mid-roll ads.
The best mode depends on whether you prioritize YouTube’s automated timing, regular intervals, or direct control over when to insert breaks.

Choose how mid-roll timing works
| Mode | Who chooses timing | How breaks work | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube’s systems | YouTube aims to place ads at natural breakpoints. You can set frequency to Low, Medium, or High. | YouTube recommends this option. Viewers may receive ads at different times. YouTube reports higher average instream ad revenue per hour among channels using automatic mid-rolls, but individual ads are not assured. |
| Scheduled | You choose a fixed interval | Set breaks every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Predictable intervals offer less moment-to-moment responsiveness. YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic mid-rolls. |
| Manual | You, while streaming | Insert each break when you choose, using Live Control Room. | Provides the most direct timing control, but if you insert no mid-roll breaks, no mid-roll ads will be served. YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic mid-rolls. |
Automatic: let YouTube find breakpoints
Choose automatic if you want YouTube to select timing rather than operate every break yourself. YouTube describes safeguards intended to reduce interruptions: mid-rolls may pause temporarily for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers; channel members are protected from mid-roll interruptions; and breaks may be snoozed for everyone during high-engagement moments.
In automatic mode, Delay ads pauses automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. Live Control Room shows a five-second countdown before automatic breaks resume. This setting does not suppress breaks you insert manually.

Manual: insert a break while live
When streaming, use the ad-break control in Live Control Room at the point you want a break. YouTube also identifies an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert ads with a physical button. A Stream Deck is not required; Live Control Room supports the workflow.

What an ad cue point means for earnings
A cue point is an opportunity for YouTube’s ad system to serve an ad, not a promise that it will. YouTube Help states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Some viewers may see an ad at a break, others may see one at another time, and some may not receive one at all. Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching. YouTube’s ad systems consider viewer experience, earnings, and advertiser value; placing a break alone does not create revenue.
YouTube Help reports an average over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour when comparing channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads with channels that did not. The comparison covered 207 countries and was reported by YouTube in January 2024. It is an average comparison, not a causal guarantee, individual forecast, or promise that a particular stream will earn more. YouTube also says scheduled or manual mid-rolls may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode.
