For a YouTube Live stream at 4K/2160p and 60 fps using H.264, YouTube recommends a 35 Mbps video bitrate. Its advice to leave 20% upload headroom means about 42 Mbps of usable upload capacity for the stream alone, before other household traffic. Airtel’s ₹499 tier is listed at up to 40 Mbps; its ₹799 tier is listed at up to 100 Mbps. The 40 Mbps tier is short of that H.264 target, while 100 Mbps has more nominal capacity—but neither advertised speed nor a national typical figure guarantees performance at your address.
How much upload speed does YouTube 4K60 need?
YouTube Help’s live-encoder guidance, current in 2026, recommends a 35 Mbps bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps with H.264. YouTube separately recommends keeping 20% headroom between the stream’s total bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Dividing 35 Mbps by 0.8 gives approximately 43.75 Mbps; as a practical target, allow about 44 Mbps of stable upload capacity for the stream, plus capacity for other devices and uploads. The often-used rounded estimate of 42 Mbps is a little low for a full 20% margin.
For AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), YouTube lists a 10–40 Mbps range at 4K60. The bitrate you actually configure matters: apply the same 20% headroom to that bitrate, then account for other upload traffic. Codec choice does not remove the need to test the complete setup. YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips provide the current recommendations.
These figures are for live-stream ingest, not uploading a finished video. YouTube’s separate recorded-upload guidance recommends 53–68 Mbps for 2160p SDR video at high frame rates; that is not the target bitrate for a live 4K60 stream. YouTube’s upload-encoding guidance covers recorded videos.

How Airtel’s listed tiers compare
Airtel’s plan page lists example prices and maximum speeds, while its Q4 2025 wireline QoS report gives typical upload figures for specific tariffs. Those are different kinds of evidence: a plan’s “up to” speed is not an address-level guarantee, and national report figures do not predict a particular home’s result.
| Airtel tier | Listed plan speed and price | Q4 2025 typical upload figure | What it means for 4K60 H.264 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tariff 499 | Up to 40 Mbps; ₹499 | 40 Mbps offered typical upload; 43 Mbps 90th-percentile measured upload | Below the roughly 44 Mbps capacity target before other upload traffic. |
| Tariff 799 | Up to 100 Mbps; ₹799 | 100 Mbps offered typical upload; 106 Mbps 90th-percentile measured upload | More nominal headroom, but stability and competing traffic still matter. |
| Other examples on Airtel’s plan page | ₹1599 up to 300 Mbps; ₹3999 up to 1 Gbps | Not stated here for these tariffs | Higher listed speed alone does not establish the upload performance at a particular address. |
Plan prices and terms can vary, and prices may exclude taxes where indicated. Airtel notes that some tiers are limited to select geographies; use its serviceability check to confirm what is offered at the streaming address. Check the actual connection before streaming
- Confirm availability at the broadcast address. Check Airtel’s serviceability and plan terms for the place where the encoder will connect; availability and tiers can differ by area.
- Test upload, not just download. Run a speed test on the same computer and connection you will use for the broadcast. YouTube Help explicitly says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A fast download result does not answer whether the connection can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate.
- Test with the real workload. Use the chosen encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate, with motion and audio similar to the planned program. Test over the same network method and with the household devices likely to be online during the event.
- Check remaining headroom. The connection should sustain the configured stream bitrate with roughly 20% capacity left, and additional room for other uploads. If measured upload fluctuates or competing devices consume the margin, reduce the stream bitrate or resolve the contention before going live.
- Run a pre-stream test and watch stream health. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event. A single speed-test result cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
A wired Ethernet connection can help avoid Wi-Fi variability between the encoder and router; it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by Airtel. Airtel says a router is included with plans, but neither Airtel nor YouTube says a particular cable is mandatory.
Encoder settings that affect 4K60
- Resolution and frame rate: 2160p (4K) at 60 fps.
- Codec and bitrate: for H.264, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps at 4K60; for AV1 or H.265, its listed range is 10–40 Mbps. Choose a bitrate your measured connection can hold with the recommended headroom.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR), per YouTube’s live guidance.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit to Google’s servers.
- Latency: YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and are set to normal latency.
Refer to YouTube’s live encoder guidance for supported settings. Selecting a 4K60 output does not by itself guarantee viewers receive a stable 4K60 stream; the upload connection and stream health must sustain the configured output.

Common problems and what to change
- Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth: compare actual upload capacity with the encoder’s total bitrate plus headroom. Reduce bitrate or pause other uploads and traffic that compete for upload capacity.
- Download tests look good, but the stream drops frames: run an upload test. Download speed is not a substitute for sustained upload capacity.
- The 40 Mbps tier seems close enough: for H.264 at YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation, it is below the roughly 44 Mbps target with 20% headroom, even before household traffic. Use a lower bitrate/quality or a connection that tests higher and more consistently.
- Results vary between tests: repeat the test at the actual streaming location and time, with the encoder and expected household use in place. A brief peak is not proof of sustained capacity.
- Settings are rejected or the stream does not behave as expected: check the live encoder requirements for protocol, codec, CBR, frame rate and keyframe interval; then run a pre-stream test and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Copyright and live-stream eligibility
Connection speed does not establish whether a program is allowed on YouTube. Before streaming, make sure you have rights to the video, music and other material in the program, and check YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright rules. This is especially important for documentary footage, licensed clips and background music; a technically healthy stream can still face rights claims or restrictions.
