Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps, set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. The 4K resolution and 60 fps frame rate do not require a different interval.
What keyframe interval should you use for YouTube 4K 60fps in OBS?
Use 2 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” The recommendation is about how frequently the stream sends keyframes; it does not change for a 4K60 output. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
In OBS, the control is generally in the streaming encoder’s output settings, but its exact visibility and label can depend on the OBS release and selected encoder. Set it to 2 seconds where the selected encoder exposes the field.
How to set the interval in OBS
- Open Settings → Output in OBS. If the streaming controls you need are not shown, switch Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open the Streaming tab and locate Keyframe Interval in the selected encoder’s controls.
- Enter 2 seconds, if the field is available, then apply the settings.
- Before an important broadcast, run a test with representative video motion and audio, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
OBS documents keyframe interval among advanced encoder settings. Its advanced guide includes a value of 2 in example encoder configurations, but that guide covers recording examples; it is not a YouTube-specific streaming preset. Encoder controls can vary. See the OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose 4K60 output and bitrate separately
Keyframe interval is only one part of the setup. Use 3840×2160 output at 60 fps only when the source, encoder, and upload connection can sustain it. OBS exposes output resolution and frame rate in its Video settings; the OBS overview guide explains those controls.
YouTube’s 4K60 live bitrate recommendations differ by codec. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will deliver a clean stream:

| Codec | YouTube’s recommended bitrate at 4K60 | YouTube’s listed minimum at 4K60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings table, whose accessed page does not state a publication year. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, up to 60 fps, and CBR encoding. It recommends RTMPS. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table when configuring the codec and bitrate.
As a practical starting point, use the recommendation for your chosen codec and leave stable upload capacity for other network traffic. Run an upload speed test and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming that a speed-test result alone proves the stream is stable.

Stream key, latency, and encoder workload
Stream key and resolution selection
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. A custom stream key can be used to select resolution manually in Live Control Room; manual selection is not required for every stream. Keep the key private and use the stream settings associated with the broadcast you are preparing.
Latency at 4K
YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization for 4K/2160p streams; YouTube says those streams use normal latency. If low latency is essential, account for that limitation when choosing the stream format.

Software or hardware encoding
Choose an encoder your system can sustain at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. OBS notes that hardware encoders shift encoding work off the CPU, but this does not mean you need to buy new hardware. A capture card is relevant only when bringing video from external equipment such as a camera or console; it is not needed to change the keyframe interval.
YouTube’s codec, latency, stream-key, and ingest details are in its live encoder settings guidance. OBS provides additional context on hardware encoding.

Test before going live
- Test the full stream path before an event, using similar audio and video motion to the planned broadcast.
- Check upload speed and leave capacity for other network activity.
- Watch YouTube stream health during the test and the live broadcast; adjust bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain them.
- Confirm the keyframe interval in the selected streaming encoder when OBS exposes that control.
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video motion, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health. OBS also recommends testing settings before a real stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and the OBS Studio overview.
Or let it run in the cloud
