A Singapore VPS does not guarantee a short or direct route to the server delivering a YouTube video. To investigate buffering, compare the same video on the VPS and another connection at the same time, record YouTube’s playback behavior, and collect repeated DNS and route observations. Those tests can help narrow where to look; a ping or traceroute alone cannot identify the cause.
What a route test can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube content may come from a local Google Global Cache (GGC), a Google core location, or through peering and transit. Google says its systems choose serving locations using factors including application performance, demand, capacity, maintenance, legal requirements, and DNS resolver configuration. It explicitly says ICMP ping latency is not used to select a serving location and does not accurately represent application performance (Google Interconnect Help: Content Served).
That means a long ping time, a route that appears to leave Singapore, or an unanswered traceroute hop is not proof that a particular network is causing the buffering. ICMP may be deprioritized or rate-limited. Google describes ping and traceroute as tools for locating delays or confirming reachability, not measuring DNS resolution speed (Google Public DNS troubleshooting).
Google’s general network description explains that an ISP carries content exchanged with Google over peering toward its customers; for a VPS, performance can involve both Google’s network and the VPS provider’s network or upstreams (Google peering overview). This is general context, not evidence of the route used by your particular VPS. Without the provider, destination IP, timestamps, and test output, no specific hop or cause can be identified.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test whether the problem is specific to the VPS
- Choose one video. Use the same YouTube video on the VPS and on an independent connection, such as a separate home or mobile connection. Compare as close to the same time as possible; YouTube’s buffering guidance recommends trying a different internet connection (YouTube video buffering).
- Hold playback conditions steady. Select the same playback quality on both connections and note whether either player changes quality automatically. YouTube recommends trying a manual quality adjustment; a lower setting can help determine whether the symptom changes with playback demand, but does not by itself establish a route fault.
- Repeat during a good and a bad period. A single comparison is a snapshot. Record at least one period when playback works and one when it buffers, with exact UTC times. If the independent connection works while the VPS stalls, that makes the VPS path a useful focus for investigation, but it does not prove whether the VPS provider, an upstream, Google, or another factor is responsible.
Record what the player is doing
While reproducing the stall, write down the video, selected quality, exact UTC time, and what happens to the buffer: for example, whether it drains to empty, pauses intermittently, or resumes after a quality change. If the player exposes connection speed or throughput, capture that reading too. Keep observations from the independent connection separate from those on the VPS.
These application-level observations matter because ICMP latency is not a substitute for how quickly video data reaches the player. A route trace can add context, but the playback symptom and delivery measurements are the evidence most directly tied to the problem.

Identify the destination and collect route observations
- Record DNS answers from the VPS. Note the YouTube or video-delivery hostname you are investigating, the resolver used, the returned addresses, and the time of each lookup. Use the operating system’s available DNS tools; the correct command depends on the VPS operating system and resolver setup.
- Trace the actual destination when possible. Repeat route observations to the destination address associated with the video-delivery hostname during both good and bad periods. Include the full output and timestamp. A trace to
youtube.comis not necessarily a trace to the host delivering that video’s chunks. - Compare address families only when relevant. If the VPS is actually using both IPv4 and IPv6, record observations for each separately. Do not infer a difference from a protocol family that the playback connection is not using.
- Preserve the test conditions. Record the VPS provider and region, resolver, destination address, playback quality, and UTC time alongside each result. Repeating comparable tests is more useful than comparing unrelated traces collected at different times or to different destinations.
Ping and traceroute do not measure DNS resolution speed. Google’s public guidance describes them primarily as ways to investigate reachability and delays, so keep DNS lookup results distinct from route and playback measurements (Google Public DNS troubleshooting).
Interpret results without blaming a hop prematurely
- An intermediate hop does not answer: that alone does not show that video packets are being lost. Routers may limit or deprioritize ICMP replies while forwarding other traffic.
- An intermediate hop reports high latency: this is a clue, not proof of congestion affecting the video flow. Look for repeatable correspondence with end-to-end playback behavior.
- The trace looks long or leaves Singapore: this does not establish which YouTube serving location handled the video, or that the route is faulty. Google may serve content through GGC or Google core locations, and ICMP ping latency does not determine the serving-location choice.
- Changing DNS seems tempting: DNS resolver configuration is one factor in Google’s serving-location selection, but that does not mean changing resolvers will improve this case. Test and record resolver results rather than assuming a DNS change is a fix.
- Only the VPS buffers: this narrows the investigation toward the VPS connection and its route, but does not identify the provider, an upstream, or Google as the cause.

This request is practical because the provider controls the VPS’s network connectivity; the evidence does not establish in advance that its network is at fault. If the issue affects YouTube more broadly rather than only this VPS, use YouTube’s in-product feedback or the relevant support path and include diagnostics, as Google’s reporting guidance recommends (Google: report an issue).
