If YouTube Live says your H.264 video codec profile is wrong, read the full warning in Live Control Room before changing encoder settings. A warning about an incorrect profile on one incoming stream is different from a warning that the primary and backup streams use different profiles. For failover, make their profiles—and their other required stream settings—match. YouTube does not prescribe one universal H.264 profile value or encoder menu path; the right setting depends on your encoder and stream configuration.
Identify which profile warning YouTube is showing
YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room display stream-health messages with timestamps. YouTube classifies red errors as critical and potentially able to prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Read the category and complete message, not just the word “profile.”
- Incorrect stream format: YouTube’s message is “Please correct the video codec profile for the stream. The video is encoded with the wrong codec profile.” This points to the profile on an incoming video stream.
- Mismatched primary and backup streams: YouTube’s message says to configure both streams to have the same profile because they currently have different profiles. This concerns failover configuration.
These are distinct diagnoses. A profile warning by itself does not establish that you need a new encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming error messages explain the categories and their remedies.
Fix the warning in your encoder
- Open Live Control Room and record the full message. Note its category, wording, and timestamp. YouTube says the error continues to appear while it remains unfixed.
- If it names primary and backup streams, compare both encoder configurations. Set the video codec profile to the same value on both, then check the other dimensions YouTube lists: resolution, video codec, interlacing, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, audio channels, and audio codec. YouTube says primary and backup streams need the exact same settings for failover.
- If it says the incoming stream has the wrong profile, inspect the encoder’s video codec profile setting. Confirm the required profile for your stream configuration in your encoder’s settings or help documentation. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not prescribe one profile value for every setup, and the menu path varies by encoder.
- Apply the change and test the stream before the event. Send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned program, preview it in Live Control Room, and check stream health for remaining messages.
Do not guess at a profile value based on the warning alone. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide general recommendations, not a universal H.264 profile selection or vendor-specific instructions.

Check related YouTube encoder settings
These settings provide context when reviewing an encoder configuration; they do not replace the specific correction indicated by the health message. For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
YouTube’s recommended advanced live settings include square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the matching H.264 row in YouTube’s current settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Choose a stream quality your internet connection can reliably send. YouTube recommends testing upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom; check outbound upload capacity rather than assuming download speed represents it. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Test failover and monitor stream health
For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube recommends setting up in advance, starting the encoder before the event, and checking the preview. If you rely on a primary and backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm the backup takes over as expected. Continue monitoring Live Control Room health messages during the event.

Troubleshoot if the warning remains
- The message is still visible after changing settings: Recheck the full message and timestamp in Live Control Room. Confirm the change was applied to the encoder that is actually sending the stream, then inspect the current health messages.
- Only the backup-stream warning remains: Compare all listed primary and backup settings, not just profile. YouTube requires the settings to match for failover.
- You cannot find the profile setting: Look in the encoder’s video or codec configuration and consult that encoder’s documentation. The correct menu path is encoder-specific.
- The stream previews poorly or drops during testing: Review upload capacity and choose a more reliable stream quality for the available connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
- You are considering replacing hardware: This warning alone does not show that a physical encoder or capture device is faulty. YouTube’s documented remedy is to correct the stream settings and, for failover, align the primary and backup configurations.
