Is a YouTube Kids profile the same as a Family Link child account?
No. A YouTube Kids profile is a child-focused profile inside the YouTube Kids experience. A Family Link child account is a Google Account created or managed for a child. A Family Link account can be limited to YouTube Kids, but a YouTube Kids profile can also simply be the selected profile on a shared television or streaming device.
In YouTube Kids, parents can choose the content level—Preschool, Younger, or Older—and can turn Search on or off, block content, approve content manually, pause or clear history, and set a timer. Google describes these controls in its YouTube Kids information for parents.
For a child account created through Family Link, Google says the child can use YouTube Kids where available but cannot use other YouTube apps, websites, or features until the child turns 13 or reaches the applicable age in the relevant country or region. The threshold is therefore not universally 13. The account’s location and local age rules matter; the Google and YouTube guidance for a child’s account explains the qualification.
Why can a child use regular YouTube under supervision?
A supervised kid account is a parent-managed version of regular YouTube and YouTube Music, not the same product as YouTube Kids. Depending on the selected setting, the account may not be able to comment, use live chat, create a channel, upload videos, use Shorts, create public playlists, or make purchases. Google lists these feature restrictions in its supervised-account feature documentation. Consequently, switching from YouTube Kids to supervised YouTube may provide access to the main app without making the account unrestricted.
Why does YouTube Kids open on my TV?
If YouTube Kids opens only on a television, streaming device, or game console, the most likely documented explanation is that the device has a YouTube Kids profile selected. Shared devices can remember the child profile and open into it until someone changes the selection on the account or Who’s Watching? screen.

How do I stop YouTube from opening YouTube Kids?
Use the following sequence to identify the account-level cause before changing hardware or reinstalling the app.
1. Switch the active profile
Open the account switcher on a phone, tablet, computer, TV, or console. On a shared device, use Who’s Watching? and select the intended parent or adult profile. This resolves the problem when YouTube Kids was selected locally rather than imposed on the account.
2. Check the Google Account signed into YouTube
On the affected phone, tablet, Chromebook, or other device, verify the email address currently signed into YouTube. A Family Link-managed child account may be restricted to YouTube Kids where available, even if the device itself belongs to a parent.
3. Review Family Link or YouTube Family Center
The parent should open Family Link or YouTube Family Center and review the child’s YouTube settings. 4. Inspect TV and device profile controls
When the issue occurs only on a TV or console, remove the unwanted local profile selection or switch profiles from the account page. Check whether a parent code is enabled and whether another household member is selecting the child profile at startup.
5. Review the birthday if the affected user is an adult or teen
Review the birthday in the Google Account. YouTube provides a birthday-verification flow, and mobile users may need to sign out and sign back in after verification. Correcting account information may help when the stored birthday is wrong, but changing a birthday does not necessarily remove existing Family Link supervision.
6. Complete age verification if YouTube offers it
YouTube may ask an adult or teen to verify age using a government ID, credit card, or selfie, depending on the option offered in that account and region. Can YouTube think an adult is a child?
Yes. YouTube says it may estimate whether a user is under 18 regardless of the birthday stored on the account. If YouTube estimates that a user is under 18, YouTube can apply protections such as non-personalized ads, digital-wellbeing reminders, recommendation safeguards, and search protections.
Age estimation should not automatically be described as the cause of every YouTube Kids redirect. YouTube’s documentation presents age estimation as a separate age-safety mechanism, and an age-estimated teen experience is not identical to a selected YouTube Kids profile or a Family Link child account.
On July 29, 2025, YouTube announced a broader U.S. rollout of machine-learning age estimation for teen protections. James Beser, YouTube’s Director of Product Management for YouTube Youth, said: “This technology will allow us to infer a user’s age and then use that signal, regardless of the birthday in the account, to deliver our age-appropriate product experiences and protections.” The July 29, 2025 YouTube announcement describes that rollout.
YouTube’s current documentation says age estimation is applied in several markets, including Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and countries in the European Economic Area, with expansion planned. Availability and verification choices can change by country, account, and date.

- Reinstalling YouTube: reinstalling does not change the age, supervision, or Family Link state of the signed-in Google Account.
- Buying another streaming device: another device does not remove account restrictions and may reproduce the same profile selection after sign-in.
- Clearing app data: clearing local data may remove a remembered profile, but it does not remove Family Link supervision or turn a child account into an unrestricted adult account.
- Changing the birthday: changing account information does not necessarily remove existing supervision and may trigger a verification request.
- Disabling one YouTube Kids setting: turning off Search or changing a content level does not grant every feature available on regular YouTube.

YouTube Kids is not a guarantee that every video is suitable for every child. YouTube says its systems combine algorithmic selection, user input, and human review, but also warns that no algorithm is perfect. Recommendations and Search can therefore surface content a parent does not want a child to see.
For stronger limits, parents can turn off Search, block individual videos or channels, or select Approved content only. When Search is off, access is limited to channels verified by YouTube Kids and videos or channels shared by a parent.
