Newswipe with Charlie Brooker was a BBC Four comedy programme that satirized television news and current-affairs coverage. Following the approach of Screenwipe, it examined how news was presented, from studio conventions and live reports to the framing of complicated events. It ran from 2009 to 2010.
What was Charlie Brooker’s Newswipe?
Written and presented by Charlie Brooker, Newswipe applied the satirical approach of Screenwipe to news media. British Comedy Guide describes it as a spin-off that took an “irreverent and often despairing look” at global TV news coverage.

The programme’s subjects included the financial crisis, newsreaders, political corruption, the war on terror, citizen journalism, viewer-submitted footage, fearmongering, political interviews, Haiti, and live reporting. Across those topics, it drew attention to the television conventions used to turn events into broadcast stories, such as anchor personas, graphics, clips, vox pops, and live reports. That is a synthesis of the listed subjects and format, not a claim that every episode used every device.

What did the programme cover?
Episode listings show a mix of news events and questions about news-making: political coverage, conflict, media figures, viewer footage, and reporting styles. Tim Key’s poems and contributions from journalists and other media figures also featured; the first-series finale included journalists Nick Davies and Peter Oborne, according to the season guide.
A 2010 BBC Trust media-literacy report used a short Newswipe excerpt in focus groups. Only a handful of participants had encountered the programme. Participants in that sample perceived it as aimed at “a more upmarket and more educated viewer in their 20s-40s,” and the report records that BBC Four scheduling reinforced this impression. These were qualitative findings from the groups, not a representative measure of the programme’s audience.
