A black screen at the end of a YouTube gaming replay does not point to one definite cause. First check whether it appears only after the final frame, starts before the replay should end, or affects other videos and viewers too. That distinction helps separate a normal endpoint or missing archive from a playback problem or a fault in the recorded stream.
First identify when and where the screen turns black
Note the replay’s timeline, whether audio continues, and whether the broadcast is still marked live. A black screen after the final frame can simply be the player’s end state; it does not by itself establish that the replay is damaged. A screen that goes black before the timeline ends, or while the event still appears live, calls for further checks.
- Only one device or connection: a local app, browser, device, or network playback issue becomes more plausible, though this does not prove a hardware fault.
- One replay on several devices: the archive may be unavailable or defective, or the problem may be in that stream’s recording.
- Several viewers on different connections: a creator-side encoder or stream issue is possible. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and a local recording.
- Other YouTube videos also fail on the same setup: investigate that playback path before assuming the gaming replay itself is at fault.
Viewer troubleshooting: test the replay and playback setup
- Try another device and connection. Open the replay on another supported device and, if possible, a different internet connection. Check another YouTube video on the original setup as well. YouTube recommends testing another device or connection when diagnosing playback issues (YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance).
- Refresh the computer playback path. Close and reopen the browser, update it, close unnecessary tabs, and restart the device. If other videos work but this replay remains black across devices, repeatedly resetting the same browser is unlikely to establish what is wrong with the archive.
- Refresh the YouTube app. Restart and update the app and device. On platforms that offer the option, clear the YouTube app cache, then try the replay again.
- For a TV, test another route. Check the connection and playback quality, reopen the YouTube app, and restart or update the TV device. YouTube also suggests trying playback from another device by casting, or connecting a laptop to the TV with HDMI (YouTube TV playback suggestions).
- If the replay alone still fails, report that specific video. Contact the channel or send feedback through YouTube. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance offers an in-app feedback route; a local device reset cannot restore an unavailable or defective archive.
Creator checks: confirm that a replay exists
A livestream ending does not guarantee that a replay was posted. YouTube says a channel may post highlights or a replay, and that a posted replay appears as a video on the channel (YouTube: Learn about live streams). Check the channel’s videos and YouTube Studio to confirm that the archive exists and its visibility is appropriate.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup (YouTube: Archive live streams). The 12-hour guidance concerns whether a stream may be archived; it does not diagnose a black screen in an archive that does exist.

Check the recording against the live-stream evidence
- Play the local recording, if one was made, and compare the point where YouTube’s replay goes black. If the local file has the same defect, the issue is present in that recording; if it plays correctly, that is useful evidence but does not by itself identify the cause of the YouTube playback problem.
- If multiple viewers on different connections report trouble, inspect the live dashboard and encoder output. YouTube advises creators to check the encoder’s picture and sound and to review the local archive for defects (YouTube: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Review stream warnings if the live broadcast was interrupted or replaced by a placeholder image. YouTube says copyright detection can replace a live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; Content ID claims for an archived live video are made after the stream is completed. Copyright is one possible creator-side context, not a confirmed explanation for any particular black replay (YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams).
For channels using the Live API
YouTube’s Live API documentation says immediate post-broadcast playback requires the relevant broadcast setting and enableArchive to be enabled (YouTube Live API: LiveBroadcasts). This is a creator/API configuration detail; viewers cannot change it. For other creator-side options, consult YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
What a black screen does—and does not—tell you
The symptom alone cannot establish whether the replay was never posted, is still unavailable, contains a recording defect, or is failing only on one playback setup. YouTube’s guidance gives troubleshooting steps, not a frequency estimate for this exact symptom. A useful report to the channel includes the replay link, the approximate point in the timeline, whether audio continues, the device and app or browser, and whether the problem also occurs on another device or connection.

For future always-on YouTube gaming streams
If the issue is that a channel needs uploaded gaming recordings to continue looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps that stream running from the cloud, but it does not repair a missing or defective replay, and it is not a camera-based live broadcast. The first day is free with no card. Details and the trial are at StreamNeo registration.
