Monthly Cost of a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Google Cloud Compute Engine

A 24/7 Compute Engine YouTube stream has no universal monthly price. Calculate VM runtime and disks separately, account for the qualifying YouTube transfer category, and test the encoder on the VM you choose.

There is no single monthly price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on Google Cloud Compute Engine. The total depends on the VM type and region, disk capacity, billing-period hours, and the encoding workload. Estimate VM runtime and storage separately; Google Cloud lists transfer from a VM to YouTube as no charge in the applicable VM-to-Google-products network category. That does not make every possible cloud resource or destination free.

What makes up the monthly bill?

For a useful estimate, calculate the selected VM’s hourly charge across the hours it will run, then add persistent disks and any other resources actually used. Google Cloud presents Compute Engine costs across compute, storage, and networking, and its VM-instance prices do not include disks or networking. Use the Google Cloud pricing calculator with your chosen configuration rather than treating a VM-only figure as the complete bill.

Cost component How to account for it
VM runtime Choose a machine family, size, and region, then multiply its applicable hourly charge by planned run hours. VM pricing varies by machine type and region.
Persistent disks Add the boot disk and any disk used for media, logs, or local archives. Disk charges are separate from the VM-instance price.
VM-to-YouTube stream feed Google Cloud’s network-pricing documentation lists transfer from a VM to specified Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. Apply this only when the traffic qualifies under that category.
Other resources or destinations Include separately used services, snapshots, logging, IP addresses, backup VMs, or traffic to other destinations only when your design uses them and after checking their billing treatment.

For planning arithmetic, a 30-day month has 720 hours and a 31-day month has 744 hours. Use the actual billing-period duration in your estimate; these are hour counts, not Google Cloud monthly prices. Google Cloud also lists discounts and a free tier, but whether either applies depends on account eligibility, machine, region, and terms. Do not deduct one unless you have verified those conditions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to build an estimate that matches your stream

  1. Choose the workload. Record the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder software. The VM must encode and upload the ingest stream; YouTube says it transcodes live streams into different viewer playback formats.
  2. Select a candidate VM and region. Use the pricing calculator to find the candidate’s hourly price for that region. The available information does not establish which VM size can encode a given resolution reliably, so do not assume that a low-cost instance—or a free-tier instance—is a fit without testing the actual encoder and settings.
  3. Set the hours. Multiply the VM’s hourly charge by the hours in your intended billing period. For uninterrupted operation, use 720 hours for a 30-day month or 744 hours for a 31-day month, adjusting to the actual period.
  4. Add storage and resources used. Include the boot disk and any disk for source media, logs, or archives. Add other services or a backup VM only if the design includes them.
  5. Check network categories. Do not apply ordinary internet egress rates to the VM-to-YouTube feed when it qualifies for the documented no-charge category. Other destinations and traffic types may be billed differently.
  6. Validate before committing. Run a test stream using the intended software, resolution, frame rate, codec, and scene complexity. Confirm the VM sustains encoding without dropped frames or overload, then revise the machine selection and cost estimate if needed.

A defensible total should state the region, VM family and size, disk type and capacity, stream settings, monthly hours, and which additional resources are included. Without those inputs, a quoted monthly dollar amount would imply precision the available facts do not support.

Encoder settings that affect the VM choice

YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies ingest settings, not CPU requirements for particular VM sizes. Its 2026 recommendations include these bitrate ranges:

Output Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes; it recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers. These are YouTube encoder specifications, not measured benchmarks for Google Cloud machines. A codec’s bitrate recommendation alone does not tell you whether a particular VM can encode it smoothly. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Configure YouTube Live and plan for long broadcasts

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; streamers must be at least 16 years old. These requirements are separate from cloud configuration. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the Live server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter both in the encoder configuration on the VM. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
  3. Start with the encoder settings above. Set the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval, then confirm that the encoder sends to YouTube using the intended ingest protocol.
  4. Test the complete path. Check the encoder’s local status and YouTube’s live preview before relying on the setup for continuous transmission. Verify the selected VM under the actual workload rather than inferring performance from its price or name.
  5. Decide how to handle archives. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a 24-hour stream will be archived as one uninterrupted video. Check YouTube’s current long-stream and archive handling and decide whether your workflow will restart or segment broadcasts.

Setup reference: YouTube Live streaming setup.

Common cost and reliability mistakes

  • Using the VM line item as the whole bill: add disks and any other resources in the design; VM-instance pricing excludes disks.
  • Applying ordinary internet egress to the YouTube feed: check the documented VM-to-YouTube category first. Do not generalize its no-charge treatment to unrelated destinations.
  • Assuming a small or free-tier VM can encode continuously: no VM sizing benchmark is established here. Test the real encoder, settings, and workload.
  • Budgeting an assumed 30-day period for every month: use the billing period’s actual hours; 31 days adds 24 runtime hours compared with 30 days.
  • Assuming one uninterrupted archive: YouTube’s cited setup guidance specifies automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24-hour broadcast.
  • Adding a backup VM or extras by default: include only resources your reliability design actually uses, and account for their separate billing treatment.
