An “Excellent” encoder status does not guarantee that audio is reaching YouTube. First read the detailed message and timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room, then trace the sound from your source through the encoder, local recording, YouTube preview, and watch page. That sequence shows whether the fault is in the audio path, stream format, delivery, or viewer playback.
1. Read the detailed Live Control Room message
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and look at its detailed errors, not just the overall health indicator. YouTube Help’s Live streaming error messages page describes the error “Your encoder is sending no audio.” The page also says, “The ingestion stream contains no audio stream” and “Multiple audio streams will cause ingestion problems.” Errors have timestamps and may remain visible until corrected, so note when the message appeared and whether it matches the time you heard silence.
If YouTube reports no audio, check whether your encoder has an audio-enable checkbox or control, and confirm its outgoing stream includes an audio track. If it reports multiple audio streams or a format issue, use that specific message to guide the next check rather than changing unrelated settings.
2. Confirm the sound reaches the encoder
Check the audio source selected for the live output: microphone, desktop or application audio, mixer, or another intended input. Make sure it is routed to the stream, not muted, and that its level is active while sound is playing. If your encoder provides meters or a way to monitor its output, verify that they respond to the sound you expect viewers to hear.

YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking sound directly in the encoder and investigating the quality of audio and video sources routed to it. It also recommends reviewing encoder errors and CPU load. Menu names vary by encoder, so check the controls for your specific software rather than relying on a generic menu path.
3. Play the encoder’s local recording
If your encoder saves a local recording or archive, play the section corresponding to the silent stream. YouTube recommends checking the local archive for audio or video problems.

- The recording is silent too: Focus on the source selection, mute or enable state, routing, and encoder audio configuration.
- The recording has sound: The source and recorded output are working at that point in the signal path. Next compare YouTube’s preview and watch-page playback, and inspect Live Control Room errors.
4. Check the audio stream and its settings
Confirm that the outgoing stream includes exactly one audio stream and uses a codec YouTube supports. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs; its recommended encoder settings specify 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are recommended settings, not proof that sample rate or bitrate is the cause of every silent stream. Check the actual Live Control Room error before changing your configuration.
5. Compare preview with watch-page playback
Preview the stream in Live Control Room before starting it, then check the public or unlisted watch page. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.

- Preview and watch page are both silent: Return to the encoder output and Live Control Room errors; YouTube may not be receiving an audio track.
- Preview has sound but the watch page does not: Test the watch page in another browser or on another device to distinguish a playback problem from a stream-wide one.
- Only one viewer or device hears silence: Check the player volume, browser sound setting, device volume, and system audio output. YouTube’s viewer troubleshooting guidance recommends starting with player volume and device sound settings.
6. Check the network only if encoder output is healthy
If the encoder output is silent, fix its audio path before troubleshooting the internet connection. If the encoder output is healthy but YouTube delivery looks or sounds impaired, check the outbound upload connection and network reliability. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance places connection checks after confirming the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder; contact your internet provider if you identify a connection problem.
