Yes, YouTube changed its profanity policy on July 29, 2025—but the change concerns advertising eligibility, not a blanket permission to swear. Strong profanity, including the f-word, used within the first seven seconds of a video or Short can now be eligible for full ad revenue. That does not guarantee ads, and repeated profanity, risky titles or thumbnails, slurs, harassment, and other unsuitable content can still result in limited or no monetization.
What changed on July 29, 2025?
YouTube relaxed one specific part of its advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Before the change, strong profanity in the first seven seconds could lead to limited or no ad revenue. Under the policy announced on July 29, 2025, strong profanity in that opening window became eligible for full ad revenue in videos and Shorts.
YouTube said the update reflected advertiser controls and creator feedback, with gaming creators among those expected to benefit. “Eligible” is important: it means the content can qualify under YouTube’s ad-suitability rules. It does not mean every video will receive ads, that every advertiser will accept it, or that the video is protected from later review.

Is cursing allowed on YouTube now?
Ordinary profanity is not automatically the same as a Community Guidelines violation. A video can remain online while being unsuitable for all advertisers. YouTube therefore separates three questions:
- Can the video be uploaded and remain available? Profanity alone does not necessarily answer this question.
- Does it violate the Community Guidelines? Harassment, threats, hateful conduct, or targeted abuse can create separate problems.
- Is it suitable for advertising? A permitted video may still receive limited or no ad revenue.
The July 2025 update changed the third question in a narrow way. It did not create a general exemption for abusive, hateful, threatening, or degrading speech.
The seven-second rule is not a safe harbor
The phrase “first seven seconds” identifies the restriction YouTube relaxed; it is not a universal period during which anything is safe. The update does not mean creators can use unlimited profanity in an opening, guarantee a green icon, or override restrictions on metadata, slurs, harassment, or other unsuitable subjects.
A practical reading is this: an isolated or limited instance of strong profanity at the beginning may now be eligible for full ad revenue, provided the complete video and its metadata satisfy the advertiser-friendly framework.

What still affects monetization?
Severity and word choice
YouTube’s Help Center uses examples rather than a complete dictionary. “Hell” and “damn” are examples of less problematic language. “Bitch,” “douchebag,” “asshole,” and “shit” are examples of moderate profanity. The f-word is an example of stronger profanity. Hateful language and slurs are a separate and much more serious category.
These examples are not automatic guarantees. Classification can depend on the words used, how they are used, where they appear, and what surrounds them.

Frequency and focal use
A single expletive in an otherwise ordinary documentary, gaming video, interview, or commentary piece is different from profanity in nearly every sentence. YouTube’s guidance identifies frequent profanity throughout most of a video, as well as profanity used as a focal point, as monetization risks.
There is no published formula such as “three swear words are safe” or “one word per minute is unsafe.” Creators should evaluate the overall pattern:
- Lower risk: occasional profanity that is incidental to the subject.
- Medium risk: repeated strong language or profanity that is a prominent part of the presentation.
- Higher risk: profanity in most sentences, throughout most of the runtime, or used primarily for shock value.
Titles and thumbnails
Do not assume that a word acceptable in spoken audio is equally safe in a title or thumbnail. YouTube’s guidance treats metadata separately:

- Abbreviated or obscured profanity, along with examples such as “hell” or “damn,” may be compatible with ad revenue.
- Moderate profanity in a title or thumbnail may receive limited ad earnings.
- Stronger profanity in a title or thumbnail may receive no ad revenue.
The title and thumbnail are also the viewer’s first impression and can make profanity appear to be the central selling point, increasing the risk even when the spoken content is more restrained.
Context, music, and other content
Profanity in music videos, backing tracks, intro or outro music, and background audio may be eligible when it is occasional or part of the artistic context. Music and stand-up comedy can still be assessed for frequency, metadata, and other unsuitable material. A gaming video may benefit from the July 2025 change, but gameplay does not receive an unlimited-swearing exemption.
The same broad advertiser-friendly principles can apply to livestreams, but real-time speech, automatic review, replay edits, and ad placement can produce different outcomes. The July announcement specifically includes Shorts; it should not be read as a promise that every format is reviewed identically.
Examples for creators
- Gaming opening: One strong expletive during the first moments of a gameplay video is now eligible under the July 2025 change, assuming the rest of the video and metadata comply.
- Commentary with constant swearing: Profanity in nearly every sentence is a higher-risk pattern and may receive limited or no ads.
- Profane thumbnail: Using the f-word as the main thumbnail hook remains a high monetization risk, even if the video itself contains little profanity.
- Comedy or music: Occasional profanity in an artistic or comedic context may be eligible, but the result still depends on the complete presentation.
- Slur: A slur is not merely an ordinary profanity case. Apply YouTube’s hateful or derogatory-content rules and do not treat the July update as protection.
What to do after a yellow icon
A yellow monetization icon does not necessarily prove that YouTube misunderstood the profanity rule. It may reflect repetition, metadata, captions, text on screen, music, or another advertiser-friendly category. Automated systems can also make mistakes.
- Open the video’s monetization status in YouTube Studio.
- Review the advertiser-friendly category identified by YouTube.
- Check the entire content package: spoken audio, title, thumbnail, description, tags, captions, on-screen text, music, and background audio.
- If the decision appears incorrect or the context was misunderstood, request human review through YouTube Studio.
- Allow time for the additional review. Some monetization decisions take longer because YouTube may perform further checks.
- If the video is not advertiser-friendly, you can leave ads off for that video while remaining in the YouTube Partner Program.
Interface labels can change, so follow the review option currently shown in your Studio account. YouTube explains the process in its guidance on best practices and individual-video monetization and human review.

Can a green icon change later?
Yes. YouTube says its systems may continue scanning videos to determine whether they meet advertiser-friendly guidelines. An initial green icon is therefore not an absolute lifetime guarantee. A later decision may reflect additional scanning, updated context, metadata, or another policy category.

How the policy evolved
November 2022: stricter treatment
YouTube’s November 2022 update said profanity in the title, thumbnail, first seven seconds, or consistently throughout a video could result in no ad revenue. Profanity after the first eight seconds could be eligible in some circumstances. That was historical guidance, not the current headline rule.

After creator complaints, YouTube clarified the policy. Moderate profanity anywhere in a video could be eligible for a green icon; stronger profanity in the first seven seconds or repeated through most of a video could receive limited ads rather than automatically receiving no ads; and profanity after the first seven seconds could generally receive a green icon unless used repetitively.

The March 2023 clarification explains that earlier treatment was stricter than intended.
July 29, 2025: the opening restriction was relaxed
YouTube then made strong profanity in the first seven seconds eligible for full ad revenue. This is the change behind claims that YouTube “now allows cursing.”
August 18, 2026: no listed profanity reversal
In the policy-update information available on August 18, 2026, YouTube continued to list the July 2025 profanity change as the relevant update. Newer 2026 entries concerned controversial issues, firearms-related content, and shocking content—not a later reversal or broad removal of the profanity rules.
What creators should remember
The safest publishing strategy is not to count swear words mechanically. Consider the severity of the language, its timing, frequency, role in the story, appearance in metadata, and whether it overlaps with harassment, hateful conduct, sexual content, or shocking material.
For documentary, journalism, commentary, and gaming creators, context can matter—but context is not an automatic monetization guarantee. Keep strong language occasional when possible, avoid making it the title or thumbnail’s main hook, and use YouTube Studio’s human-review process when an automated decision does not reflect the content.
YouTube has relaxed one prominent profanity restriction. It has not turned swearing into a guaranteed green-light category.
