Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your YouTube live archive appears to stop after an encoder reconnects, first check whether YouTube is still receiving the stream and whether your encoder’s local recording is continuing. A reconnect does not guarantee one uninterrupted YouTube archive. YouTube recommends recording a local backup and checking that the file is growing during the broadcast.
What a reconnect can—and cannot—preserve
YouTube can automatically archive live streams that run for less than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive limit, not a promise that an interruption or reconnect will be stitched into one continuous recording.
YouTube’s general guidance does not define a universal reconnect procedure for every encoder, nor does it establish that YouTube can restore a missing local recording. After an interruption, check the Live Control Room and inspect any local recording rather than assuming the archive is complete.
Recover the live session and check the recording
- Check YouTube’s stream status. Open the stream in Live Control Room and review its status and preview to see whether YouTube is receiving a feed. The controls vary with the stream configuration and encoder.
- Inspect the encoder. Check its health and output. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. If the encoder reports a healthy signal but YouTube is not receiving it, investigate the outbound internet connection.
- Check the local recording. During the broadcast, confirm that the recording file is growing. After an interruption, play through the affected section and look for a gap or damaged audio or video.
- Update the stream key only for a relevant startup or authentication error. Copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder if it reports that it cannot start or authenticate. A stream key is sensitive: treat it like a password. Resetting it is not a general remedy for every dropped connection.
- If the problem appears network-related, check upload capacity. YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping about 20% of upload capacity free beyond the stream bitrate.
- If a backup encoder is configured, verify failover. YouTube’s suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Rehearse this before a critical broadcast.
Why the archive may be incomplete
The stream crossed YouTube’s archive boundary
Under-12-hour streams can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For a long-running broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The encoder or connection stopped sending a usable feed
A network interruption or encoder fault can affect the live feed and the recording made by that encoder. Check the encoder’s status, YouTube’s preview, and the local file separately: they answer different questions about whether the feed reached YouTube and whether a backup was recorded.
The stream restarted, but continuity is not guaranteed
A reconnect can restore a live feed without proving that the final YouTube archive will be one uninterrupted file. YouTube’s published general guidance does not specify a universal reconnect behavior across encoders. Inspect the finished archive and the local recording for gaps.

Keep a local archive and understand viewer DVR
YouTube’s archive guidance says, “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” Enable local recording in your encoder and verify during the event that the file is increasing in size. After a suspected interruption, review the relevant portion instead of relying only on the YouTube replay. An external SSD can be one possible recording destination, depending on your encoder and computer; YouTube does not specify a required drive, capacity, or brand.
DVR is different: it lets viewers pause or rewind playback while the stream is live. It is not a creator-side recording or recovery feature. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; DVR settings do not establish that a local recording was saved.

Use HLS only when it fits your setup
YouTube documents HLS as an ingestion protocol, with a backup server URL option and requirements for compatible encoders. HLS is a configuration choice, not a guaranteed fix for a particular connection failure or missing recording. Check encoder compatibility and the applicable YouTube setup requirements before changing protocols.

Quick troubleshooting checks
- YouTube preview is not receiving video: inspect encoder output and the outbound connection; use the stream key steps only if the encoder reports a startup or authentication error.
- The live feed returned but the replay has a gap: check the local recording around the interruption and retain it as the backup copy if it is intact.
- The local file stopped growing: check the encoder’s recording status and available destination storage, then inspect the file for the missing section after the event.
- A long broadcast has no archive: compare its duration with YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance; streams exceeding that threshold may not be captured.
- A backup encoder is available but untested: rehearse failover by stopping the primary encoder and checking that the player switches to the backup.
