When a YouTube live stream drops frames, start with the exact message beside the Health Indicator in Live Control Room—not an assumption that your internet or encoder is at fault. Note the warning’s timestamp, follow its specific instruction, then compare that moment with your encoder settings and network conditions.
Where to find the warning
YouTube checks the stream sent to its ingest service through Live Dashboard and Live Control Room. Messages appear beside the Health Indicator at the top of Live Control Room. Each error has a timestamp; if it remains unresolved, it may continue to pop up. YouTube’s stream status guidance describes these messages and their role in diagnosing stream issues.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room while the stream is active.
- Look beside the Health Indicator for the current message.
- Record the exact wording and timestamp. If it recurs, note each time it appears.
- Compare those times with encoder logs and any changes to the network or stream setup. A timestamp can help correlate events, but it does not prove what caused the problem.
What red and yellow warnings mean
Color indicates severity, not a diagnosis. YouTube classifies red errors as critical: they may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers. Yellow errors are moderate and may degrade event quality. Neither color alone establishes why frames are dropping.
Read the full error text and its instruction. YouTube’s error catalog includes configuration-specific examples, such as an incorrect stream format or a frame-rate mismatch between primary and backup encoders. Use a remedy only if it matches the warning actually shown; a fix for one error is not a general cure for dropped frames. See YouTube’s live encoder error messages.

Check the stream settings against what you are sending
Compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s recommendations for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends a two-second keyframe interval (and says not to exceed four seconds); and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for recommendations that match your configuration.
Bitrate examples are not a diagnosis
YouTube’s recommendations accessed in 2026 list 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not universal targets or proof that a bitrate mismatch caused your warning. Check the current table for your actual stream configuration.

- Verify the codec, resolution, and frame rate selected in the encoder.
- Confirm that the output bitrate is appropriate for that combination and is set to CBR.
- Check the keyframe interval and compare it with YouTube’s recommendation.
- If using primary and backup encoders, check for configuration mismatches identified by the warning.
Check upload capacity and connection stability
The stream’s total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its guidance also accounts for primary and backup streams when evaluating whether the outbound connection has enough capacity. See YouTube’s bandwidth and encoder recommendations.
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection used by the encoder.
- Compare the available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate, including any backup stream, and leave the recommended headroom.
- Consider whether other people, devices, or traffic are using the same connection when the warning appears.
- Look for connection disruptions around the warning timestamp. A speed result at one moment does not rule out later instability.
A dropped-frames symptom by itself does not identify whether the issue is bandwidth, connection stability, or encoder configuration. YouTube’s recommendations support checking these areas; they do not establish that a particular component is defective or needs replacing.

Test before the event and monitor it live
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before an event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream health and quality during the broadcast. A test that uses the same encoder settings and network path as the event is more useful than one with a substantially different setup. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
If you use a backup encoder, YouTube describes a failover test: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. This checks failover behavior; it is not itself a fix for dropped frames.

Troubleshoot by symptom without guessing
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| A red or yellow warning appears | Read the complete message, timestamp, and instruction. Match the remedy to that specific error. |
| The warning recurs at particular times | Compare the timestamps with encoder logs, network changes, and other traffic. Treat timing as a clue, not proof. |
| The warning identifies a stream-format or encoder-setting issue | Check the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. |
| The warning coincides with limited upload capacity or a connection disruption | Check total stream bitrate, available upload bandwidth, competing traffic, and the connection’s stability; leave YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Settings and network checks do not explain the message | Do not infer a cause from “dropped frames” alone. Keep the exact text and timestamp, then consult YouTube’s error catalog and the encoder’s logs for evidence tied to the warning. |
Or let it run in the cloud
