Use those reports to identify patterns and choose experiments—not to assume that one metric explains why a video performed a certain way. Start with a goal, compare like with like, and judge results against your own history rather than a universal benchmark.
YouTube has been gradually rolling out an updated Studio experience since July 2026, so labels and layouts may differ between accounts. Analytics is available for channels and individual videos in Studio, and through YouTube apps, though some reports may not appear on mobile.
What does growth mean for your channel?
Before opening a report, decide what you want to improve. YouTube’s own channel-health guidance frames the questions plainly: “How is my channel doing?”, “Am I on the right track?” and “What is the benchmark for good performance?” The useful answer depends on your aim. A creator seeking discovery may focus on impressions and traffic sources; one working on viewer satisfaction may examine retention; a channel building a returning audience may track viewer types; and an eligible monetized channel may include revenue.
YouTube says there is no universal “good” benchmark for metrics such as click-through rate and no single most important metric to optimize for. Treat success as goal-specific. Historical performance and a broader time window—YouTube gives 90 days as an example—are more useful context than an industry-wide target that may not fit your topic or format.

Where to find channel and video reports
- For channel-level reporting: open YouTube Studio and select Analytics. Start with Overview for a high-level view.
- For one video: open Content, select the video, then open its Analytics.
- Choose the report that fits your question: use Content, Reach, Engagement, Audience, or Revenue where available. Trends can surface audience searches and content gaps.
Because the Studio interface is changing gradually, the exact placement or wording may vary. If you do not see a report in the mobile app, try Studio on a computer; not every report is available on mobile.
How did viewers discover a video?
Open Reach to inspect discovery. Traffic-source categories can include YouTube Search, browse features, suggested videos, external sources, and other sources. Use the report to ask where viewers came from and whether that mix matches your goal.
Read impressions and CTR together
An impression is a counted display of a video thumbnail on YouTube surfaces. Thumbnail impressions click-through rate (CTR) describes how often viewers watched after seeing a counted impression. CTR is not a stand-alone quality score: interpret it alongside impressions, resulting views, and watch time. A change in CTR can have different meanings depending on how many impressions a video received and where it was shown.

Use traffic sources to shape the next test
If search is an important source, review the search terms available in your report and ask whether the video clearly answers the intent behind them. If browse or suggested videos matter more, compare the video’s discovery pattern with relevant videos on your channel. These observations can suggest a topic or packaging experiment; they do not establish that a title, thumbnail, or topic caused the result.
Where do viewers stop watching?
Use Engagement to examine watch time, average view duration, engaged views where shown, and the audience-retention curve. YouTube describes the curve as a way to see which parts of a video are most and least interesting to viewers; detailed activity can show where viewers start or stop watching.
Turn retention patterns into a testable idea
Look for sections where attention falls or rises, then form a hypothesis for a future video. For example, an early decline might prompt you to test a shorter introduction, while a late arrival at the promised answer might prompt you to deliver it sooner. A single graph cannot tell you why viewers left, and it cannot prove that a particular edit caused a later change. Record the hypothesis and check it against subsequent videos.

When highlighted moments appear
Highlighted retention key moments are conditional, not guaranteed. YouTube’s guidance says a video should be at least 60 seconds long and have at least 100 views to be eligible for highlighted moments; highlights appear only when YouTube detects them. If none appear, use the retention curve that is available rather than treating the absence of highlights as a performance verdict.
Is your audience coming back?
Open Audience to consider who is watching, including new, casual, and regular viewers. These categories help distinguish reach from repeat viewing: attracting new viewers and giving people a reason to return are related but different parts of channel development. Subscriber gains and format overlap may also be available in relevant reports.

Monthly audience is not a fixed calendar-month total. YouTube calculates it daily as unique viewers during the preceding 28 days, so the window moves forward each day. Some audience and traffic data may be limited; an unavailable or partial breakdown is not evidence that no viewers came from that source.

How to compare videos and time periods fairly
Advanced Mode lets you select date ranges, breakdowns, metrics, and filters; compare videos, groups, playlists, and time periods; save reports; and export data. A group can contain up to 500 videos, playlists, or channels.
- Choose comparable items. Compare videos with similar topics or formats, or compare the same video at a similar point in its life. A first-24-hour comparison is not equivalent to comparing a mature video with a newly published one.
- Select a useful window. YouTube’s examples include comparing first 24-hour, 7-day, or 28-day performance. Use a window suited to the question and allow enough time for the outcome you care about to develop.
- Compare across more than one dimension. For discovery, inspect impressions, CTR, traffic sources, and search terms. For viewing depth, examine watch time, average view duration, engaged views, and retention. For audience development, check new, casual, and regular viewers, subscriber gains, or format overlap where available.
- Account for context. Topic, format, timing, and seasonality can affect comparisons. If a result differs, treat it as an association to investigate rather than proof that one change caused it.
- Save or export a useful view. Use Advanced Mode’s saved reports or export options when you need to revisit the same comparison or keep a record outside Studio.
Keep a simple experiment log
For each change, record what you changed, the intended outcome, and the metric and time window you will review. For example: “Test a shorter opening in the next three similar videos; review early retention and average view duration after seven days.” This makes the next comparison more deliberate, while still recognizing that one before-and-after result does not isolate the cause.

A small scorecard is easier to act on than a long list of numbers. Pick a few measures that correspond to what you are trying to improve, then review them over a consistent, relevant period.

There is no official universal CTR target or single growth number that applies to every niche and format. Use the scorecard to notice changes, compare with your own history, and decide what to test next—not to label a video successful or unsuccessful from one metric alone.
