To restart FFmpeg automatically after it exits, run it as the foreground process of a systemd service and set an intentional Restart= policy. For a stream that should retry after errors, Restart=on-failure is the usual starting point; add a deliberate RestartSec= delay and check that start-rate limits will not halt repeated attempts. Then confirm the broadcast has recovered in YouTube Live Control Room: a running FFmpeg process does not by itself prove that viewers can see a healthy live stream.
Choose the restart behavior you need
systemd supervises the process named by the service’s ExecStart= command. The restart policy determines which exits trigger another start. The systemd project’s systemd.service manual documents these policies; check the manuals installed on your host because its systemd release may differ from the upstream main-branch documentation.
| Setting | When systemd restarts FFmpeg | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
After a non-zero exit, qualifying signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout. It does not restart after an ordinary clean exit. | Use when FFmpeg should retry after failures, but a deliberate clean exit should remain stopped. |
Restart=always |
After clean exits as well as failures, subject to systemd’s rules for administrative stops and start-rate limits. | Use only when restarting after a clean exit is intentional—for example, if FFmpeg is expected to run continuously and its normal completion should also trigger a new run. |
A deliberate systemctl stop is an administrative stop, not an unexpected failure for the restart policy to defeat. Select the policy based on how the service should behave, rather than using always to mask a command that exits normally.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
Put the actual FFmpeg invocation directly in ExecStart=. Do not launch it as a shell background job: systemd needs to supervise the FFmpeg process whose exit should trigger recovery. The following is a shape to adapt, not a working universal FFmpeg command. Replace the placeholders with your input, encoding and output options, executable path, and protected YouTube stream credentials.

Description=YouTube FFmpeg live stream
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv [YouTube Live output URL using a protected stream key]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Adapt the command and protect the key
The example’s /usr/bin/ffmpeg path and 10s restart delay are illustrative, not requirements or universal recommendations. Use the path and settings appropriate to your host and stream. The YouTube encoder setup requires a Live server URL and stream key; follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the key like a password: keep it in a protected configuration mechanism, and do not put it in a public example, source repository, or logs. Do not copy an output protocol, codec, bitrate, or resolution from a sample unless it suits your own setup.
Set a retry delay that suits the failure
RestartSec= sets how long systemd waits before attempting a restart. The sample’s 10s is only an example. Choose a deliberate delay for your service and failure mode; the systemd and YouTube sources do not establish one universally correct value.

Load the unit and check the service
-
Save the unit under the service name and location used by your Linux distribution. Verify that the unit has the intended
ExecStart=,Restart=andRestartSec=values, and that FFmpeg runs in the foreground. -
Reload the systemd manager configuration after editing the unit, then start or restart the service so the manager applies the change. Use the service name for your unit in each command:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl restart <unit> systemctl status <unit> journalctl -u <unit> -
Review the status and logs for FFmpeg’s exit status, restart attempts, and any evidence that start-rate limiting has taken effect. To verify setting names and compatibility, consult the installed
systemd.serviceandsystemd.unitmanuals; the upstream documentation may describe a newer systemd release than the one on your host. -
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream preview, health notices, encoder connection details and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during an event; see its encoder settings, bitrates, resolutions and stream health guidance.

Why repeated restarts can stop
systemd applies start-rate limiting to services. On systemd releases that support these names, StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst= govern the relevant interval and permitted burst of starts. A persistent fault can cause repeated failed attempts and then rate limiting, so the service may stop retrying even though its restart policy is set. Check your installed manuals for the supported settings and use systemctl status <unit> and journalctl -u <unit> to diagnose what happened. Avoid treating ever-faster retries as a fix for a persistent problem.
Troubleshoot an FFmpeg restart that does not restore the stream
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Run the same FFmpeg command interactively with credentials protected and identify the error. A restart policy cannot fix a malformed command, missing input, invalid key, or persistent network fault.
- The service does not retry: Check
systemctl status <unit>andjournalctl -u <unit>for the exit reason and restart history. Confirm that the manager loaded the edited unit, that the exit qualifies under itsRestart=policy, and that start-rate limiting has not intervened. - FFmpeg stays up, but YouTube is not live: A process can remain running without delivering a healthy broadcast. Check the preview, health notices, encoder connection details and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The service works on one system but not another: Verify setting names and behavior against the installed systemd manuals rather than assuming an option documented on the current upstream page is supported identically by an older release.
- The stream drops without FFmpeg exiting: A process restart policy responds to service exits; it does not establish recovery for every output error that occurs while FFmpeg remains alive. Diagnose the specific FFmpeg and YouTube connection condition before choosing a separate recovery mechanism.
