Then confirm the YouTube server and stream settings, start OBS again, and check Live Control Room. If it still will not connect, diagnose the encoder, network, or a YouTube restriction separately: a correct key cannot fix those problems.
Restore the YouTube connection after OBS loses its stream key
- Get the current key. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to reach Live Control Room, choose the Stream tab, and copy the current stream key. YouTube may load previously used stream settings, including the key, for creators who have streamed before; if the key was changed or reset, use the replacement. YouTube’s instructions for encoder start errors are to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder: YouTube: Fix live stream errors.
- Update OBS. Open Settings → Stream and replace the saved key with the current YouTube key. Check that the service/server selection and server URL are for the intended YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder setup requires both its Live server URL and the stream key: YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Restart the encoder and check YouTube. Start streaming in OBS and look for the preview in Live Control Room. If the scheduled stream requires a manual start, select Go live there. Check the current stream configuration rather than assuming auto-start or auto-stop is enabled.
- Check the result. Verify that the YouTube preview and public watch page show the expected picture and sound. For a continuous broadcast, keep monitoring the stream after reconnection rather than assuming a successful OBS start means the public stream is healthy.
A stream key is a credential and destination identifier that lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed; it is not something to buy. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it. If you are an editor or viewer, ask the owner or manager to retrieve or reset the key.
If the new key still does not connect
Separate a key rejection from other causes. Check the current stream’s error message and metrics in Live Control Room, then work through the relevant branch below. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder output, audio and video, CPU load, and any local archive; if the source and encoder checks do not explain the problem, try a different encoder: YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
OBS still reports a key or destination error
- Copy the key again from the active stream’s Stream tab; make sure the key and server URL belong to the stream you intend to run.
- Replace the saved key in OBS rather than assuming the old value remains valid after a reset.
- Confirm the service/server selection and URL, then restart the encoder. If Live Control Room shows a YouTube access restriction, a new key will not remove it.
The stream starts, but drops frames or disconnects
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Check OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and whether the configured total bitrate fits the available outbound upload. YouTube recommends planning for 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For a primary and backup encoder, its guidance is to allow for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%: YouTube: Streaming tips. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a universal measured threshold.

OBS lists security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, and network settings among possible connection issues. Treat these as things to investigate, not guaranteed fixes; reducing bitrate can lessen network demand but also lowers video quality and may not fix the underlying fault. Follow OBS’s current diagnostic steps: OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. YouTube recommends a reliable connection, but does not prescribe a particular cable as the remedy for a lost key.
The encoder or computer appears overloaded
- Update OBS and inspect its error messages, encoder output, and CPU load.
- Check the stream’s audio and video output. If you record locally, review the archive to help distinguish a source or encoder problem from a network issue.
- If the encoder cannot keep up, address that fault before repeatedly changing the YouTube key.
YouTube shows a copyright strike or access restriction
Check YouTube Studio for strikes and restrictions. A copyright match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination, and a strike can also terminate a stream. Changing the key does not clear a policy restriction. Even if you have licensed the material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist: YouTube: Live stream restrictions.

Make a 24/7 stream more resilient
Allow for upload headroom
Use YouTube’s 20% upload-capacity headroom recommendation when planning bitrate. If you have both a primary and backup encoder, YouTube advises allowing for both encoders’ bitrates plus 20%. These figures are platform guidance; your actual connection and stream conditions matter.
Test failover and monitor the public stream
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking that the player rolls to the backup. Check the stream on your channel or watch page and on mobile, monitor audio and video, and confirm that any local archive files are growing. Do this before relying on a backup during a long broadcast.

Plan recording and viewer continuity separately
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one YouTube archive will preserve a continuous 24/7 broadcast end to end. If you need footage retained, make a separate local recording and retention plan; plan stream transitions and the public viewing experience deliberately.
