An ISP DNS change may coincide with a YouTube 24/7 stream stopping, but timing alone does not show that DNS caused it. First identify whether viewers cannot play someone else’s stream or your own broadcast stopped reaching YouTube: playback and live-stream ingestion fail at different points and need different checks.
First identify what stopped
Separate three situations before changing settings. A single viewer may have a playback problem; viewers may report that your broadcast is unavailable even while your encoder is running; or the encoder itself may have disconnected. Record the stream URL, affected device and app or browser, ISP, Wi-Fi or wired connection, and the local time and time zone. If you operate the channel, also note the encoder’s status and any exact error text.
- One viewer cannot watch: investigate that device and its route to YouTube.
- Several viewers report a failed broadcast: check YouTube Live Control Room and the channel’s incoming stream.
- The encoder disconnected: check its local output and outbound internet connection before assuming the issue is DNS.
The available official guidance does not establish that a particular Indian ISP changed the resolver on your device or that a nationwide YouTube outage is occurring. Treat the reported timing as a lead to test, not a diagnosis.
Compare the stream across devices and networks
- Try the same stream on another supported device using the original Wi-Fi or ISP connection.
- Try it on the affected device over mobile data or another independent connection, if available.
- If possible, test a second device on the original ISP connection as well.
YouTube recommends changing the internet connection when troubleshooting playback issues. If the video works on mobile data but not on the ISP connection, that narrows the problem toward the original network or its configuration; it does not prove DNS is the cause. If only one device fails across networks, focus on that device or app. Record which combinations work so the comparison can guide the next step.

Check DNS without guessing
YouTube’s video-error troubleshooting guidance says: “Confirm that you’re using your preferred DNS servers and that no third-party applications have modified them.” Check the affected device’s network settings and, if relevant, the router’s DNS configuration. Record the current resolver setting before changing it, and look for VPNs, security software or other third-party applications that may have altered network settings.
Do not assume that a public DNS resolver is automatically better, or that changing resolvers will fix buffering or a broken video connection. DNS helps resolve names; a lookup result by itself does not establish that the connection carrying video is stable. Google Public DNS’s troubleshooting guidance describes possible wrong answers, missing responses and network-side blocking or hijacking symptoms. If you are investigating a resolver issue, collect observations rather than repeatedly switching settings.

India’s TRAI 2021 consultation paper describes recursive DNS resolvers as commonly operated by an ISP or a third party, and notes that Indian ISPs use both their own DNS services and other providers’ DNS. This is general context, not evidence about your ISP, device or incident.
Rule out basic playback problems
- Restart and update the YouTube app or browser, and clear the YouTube app cache where that option is available.
- Try another supported device or browser to see whether the failure follows the original device.
- Check whether playback works at a lower quality, which can help distinguish a bandwidth or connection problem from a complete failure to reach the video.
YouTube’s TV playback troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD viewing. That figure applies to viewing HD video on a TV; it is not a live broadcaster’s upload bitrate requirement.

If you operate the broadcast, inspect Live Control Room
For your own 24/7 broadcast, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and capture the stream health status, exact error text and timestamp. YouTube says health-related errors appear by the health indicator: red indicates critical errors, while yellow indicates moderate ones. Use the displayed message to guide the next check rather than changing encoder settings at random.
- Confirm whether the encoder is still transmitting and whether its local output looks and sounds healthy.
- Compare that status with Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped error messages.
- If local encoder output is healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the connection; if the test finds a problem, contact the ISP.
- If an error points to stream format or bitrate, check the encoder’s configuration against YouTube’s guidance and the message shown. Do not treat a viewer’s DNS symptoms as proof of an encoder setting problem.
Does changing DNS fix YouTube buffering?
It can be relevant if the configured resolver is wrong, unreachable or has been changed unexpectedly, but it is not a general fix for buffering or a stopped broadcast. Compare devices and networks, verify the configured DNS server and check whether third-party software modified it. If those checks do not identify a resolver problem, investigate the device, connection or—if you run the broadcast—the encoder and Live Control Room health instead.

When to contact the ISP or YouTube
If the failure follows one ISP connection across devices while another independent connection works, contact the ISP with the exact times and time zone, affected stream behavior, DNS settings you recorded, and the results of each device-and-network comparison. Google Public DNS guidance says customers with persistent resolver issues may need to contact their ISP and ask it to reach Google where needed; see Google’s troubleshooting instructions. A DNS lookup result alone does not prove that video delivery is healthy or explain a broadcast-ingestion failure.
If the encoder reports errors or only your channel’s incoming stream is affected, include the Live Control Room status and timestamps when seeking help from YouTube or your encoder provider. Keep the issue’s direction clear: a viewer’s playback failure and a broadcaster’s upload failure are not interchangeable.
