For a 24/7 YouTube stream from a prerecorded 4K playlist, set the encoder to match the source frame rate and use YouTube’s recommended H.264 target: 30 Mbps at 2160p30 or 35 Mbps at 2160p60. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, test the full playback chain, and keep a separate local recording if the complete broadcast must be preserved. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Recommended 4K encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these H.264 video bitrate targets for 2160p. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain them.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Choose the frame rate that matches the source where practical. Do not convert lower-frame-rate footage to 60 fps merely to use the higher bitrate target. YouTube’s guide also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC bitrate ranges: 8–35 Mbps for 2160p30 and 10–40 Mbps for 2160p60. Those are ranges for those codecs, distinct from the H.264 recommendations above. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Video, audio, and transport
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Picture format: use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR material.
- Audio: AAC is an appropriate choice for the audio encode.
- Ingest: YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. RTMPS is its encrypted RTMP option; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for different devices and connection speeds. Sending a 4K feed therefore does not mean every viewer will receive 4K playback; the available playback rendition depends on YouTube’s transcode and the viewer’s conditions.

Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule an encoder stream. The stream URL is the encoder’s destination; the stream key authenticates the feed. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers the available controls.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Select the stream’s intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR rate control, and keyframe interval.
- Review copied settings before reuse. “Reuse settings” can carry metadata, settings, and a stream key from a previous event. Confirm that the title, visibility, and technical values are correct rather than assuming they fit the new playlist.
- Check latency and DVR choices. YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 2160p, so 4K streams use normal latency. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind the live stream and continue from where they paused; decide whether that behavior suits your channel.
- Start a test feed and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm moving video, audio, aspect ratio, and stream health before relying on the setup.
YouTube’s official setup pages describe the stream controls but do not prescribe a particular prerecorded-playlist loop procedure. Configure playlist order, looping, and unattended restart in the encoder or streaming service you choose, then test that behavior. A playlist that plays once is not a 24/7 loop.

Plan upload capacity and continuous operation
The 30 or 35 Mbps video target is only one part of the connection load. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth room and accounting for other people or devices sharing the network. Applying that headroom to a 30 Mbps video target means planning for at least 36 Mbps of usable upload capacity for that stream, before other traffic; 36 Mbps is the arithmetic result of YouTube’s guidance, not a separate bitrate target published by YouTube.
Before going live
- Run a realistic upload-speed test at the location and time you expect to stream.
- Test with footage that has movement and audio similar to the actual playlist; a static test image may not reveal all encoding or network issues.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health alerts.
- If you need a replay, verify that the local recording is being written and that the file grows and plays correctly.
While the stream runs
Monitor stream health, audio, video, and the local recording. A 24/7 broadcast depends on the encoder, network, and playlist source all continuing to work. A successful short test cannot establish that a setup will remain uninterrupted for days. YouTube’s streaming tips and live stream tips cover bandwidth testing, preparation, and monitoring.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams. But it also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Because a 24/7 stream necessarily exceeds that duration, do not rely on YouTube for a complete replay. If the archive matters, arrange an independent local recording, plan storage for the full duration, and test the recording before you depend on it. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check rights and monetization separately
Copyright can interrupt the live feed
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material appearing in another broadcast. If its systems identify such material, YouTube may show a placeholder and warn the channel; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also result in a live stream being terminated.

If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; otherwise, the stream may still be interrupted. If you archive the live stream, Content ID claims on that archived video are made after the stream ends. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Use footage and music you have the rights to use in this specific context, and do not assume that a playlist’s availability elsewhere grants live-stream rights.
Permission does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policy may make highly repetitive or mass-produced content with little educational, commentary, narrative, or other value ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: owning footage or having permission to use it does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Copyright clearance and channel-level monetization standards are different questions; a continuous schedule or a looping playlist alone does not guarantee monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common 4K stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warns of connection or bitrate trouble | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or other traffic is consuming headroom. | Recheck usable upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% room, and account for shared-network use. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended bitrate. |
| Playback is not available in 4K for a viewer | The incoming 4K feed is transcoded, but playback quality depends on the generated rendition and the viewer’s device and connection. | Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then allow for viewer-side conditions; 4K ingest does not guarantee 4K playback for every viewer. |
| 4K low-latency setting cannot be selected | YouTube does not offer its low-latency improvement option at 2160p. | Expect normal latency at 4K; choose a lower resolution only if latency is more important than 4K output. |
| The playlist stops instead of continuing | The encoder or service may be set to play the files once rather than loop them. | Check the playlist’s loop and unattended-restart settings in that tool’s documentation, then verify the transition in a test stream. |
| The live feed is interrupted after copyrighted material is detected | YouTube has identified third-party content in the stream; a license may not be reflected in the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. | Review the rights for every video and audio track, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting when applicable. Consult YouTube’s live copyright guidance. |
| No complete replay appears after a day-long broadcast | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. | Use and test an independent local recording if the full replay is important. |
