YouTube 24/7 Stream Power Cost With an Intel Quick Sync Encoder

Quick Sync can offload encoding, but it does not reveal your PC’s electricity cost. Measure the whole streaming setup over time, then calculate kWh using your local rate.

There is no reliable universal price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream with Intel Quick Sync. Your electricity cost depends on the average wall power of the entire setup—not just the processor or encoder—and your local electricity rate. Measure the running computer over time, then calculate its kWh and cost.

What determines the electricity cost?

Quick Sync Video (QSV) can move video encoding work from the CPU to supported Intel hardware, but that does not establish how many watts the whole computer will use or how much money you will save. The total includes the motherboard, memory, storage, fans, any discrete graphics card, and connected equipment left on. A monitor, audio or video gear, and peripherals also count if you want the cost of the complete streaming station rather than just the tower.

Intel describes selecting Quick Sync in OBS when it is available as a way to reduce system strain; OBS explains that hardware encoders move encoding work to a specialized component and documents Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux, subject to hardware compatibility. Neither source gives a guaranteed power reduction for a specific PC or 24/7 YouTube workload. Actual wall power depends on the system, encode settings, video and scene workload, background tasks, and power management. Intel’s streaming guide · OBS hardware-encoding documentation

Calculate the cost from your own measured watts

For a steady average load, use these formulas:

  • Daily energy (kWh) = average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000
  • Daily cost = daily kWh × your electricity price per kWh
  • Approximate 30-day cost = daily cost × 30

For a precise billing-period estimate, multiply the average load by the period’s actual number of hours and use the rate that applies to that usage. These formulas estimate energy charges; time-of-use rates, demand charges, taxes, or other bill components can make the final bill different.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Worked example—not a PC benchmark

If a meter shows an average of 100 W, the calculation is 100 × 24 ÷ 1,000 = 2.4 kWh per day, or 72 kWh over 30 days. At an electricity price of 20¢ per kWh, that would be 48¢ per day and $14.40 for 30 days. The 100 W and 20¢ figures are illustrative assumptions, not a claim about a typical streaming PC or your local tariff. Replace both with your own measurements and rate.

Measure the whole setup while it streams

  1. Choose what to include. Plug the computer into a plug-in watt meter that records cumulative kWh. Include the monitor and other equipment if they remain on and you want their cost included; alternatively, meter or account for them separately.
  2. Run your normal stream for a representative interval. Include the usual video playback, OBS scenes, encoding settings, and background workload. A brief reading may not reflect changes in content complexity, system activity, or power states.
  3. Use cumulative energy for variable loads. Record the meter’s kWh at the start and end, then divide the difference by elapsed hours to get average kW. Multiply by 1,000 to convert average kW to average watts. For example, 1.2 kWh over 12 hours is 0.1 kW, or 100 W on average.
  4. Apply your tariff. Multiply the measured kWh by the price per kWh that applies to your household or business. Use your bill or tariff rather than treating a national or federal example as your personal rate.

ENERGY STAR’s educational material uses watt meters to demonstrate computer energy use, and the U.S. Department of Energy advises measuring over time when consumption fluctuates; stable readings can be read directly. A cumulative kWh reading is generally more useful than a momentary watt display for estimating a variable stream load. ENERGY STAR watt-meter activity · DOE measurement guidance

Quick Sync and YouTube settings: useful context, not a power estimate

YouTube encoder-based streaming requires the encoder to use the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings, including bitrate ranges, constant bitrate (CBR), and RTMPS, and transcodes the incoming stream for viewers using different devices and network conditions. Those recommendations help configure delivery; bitrate is a network setting and cannot be converted directly into the PC’s electrical draw. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Do not infer a monthly bill from processor TDP, encoder utilization, a short watt reading, or a general claim that hardware encoding reduces CPU strain. The relevant input is measured average power for your complete setup under your actual streaming workload.

What published numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program used 11¢/kWh as an average electricity-price assumption in federal-facility computer-purchasing examples in July 2024. It is an example for those calculations, not a current household rate or a universal U.S. price. No directly applicable published figure establishes typical whole-system watts or a monthly electricity cost for a 24/7 YouTube stream using Quick Sync. DOE computer-purchasing examples

Compare encoders or PCs fairly

If you want to know whether QSV uses less power than another encoder or machine, measure both rather than assuming a fixed saving. Keep the output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, scene composition, stream workload, and measurement interval the same. Compare average wall watts, kWh over the same duration, cost at the same tariff, and stream quality and stability—including dropped or encoding frames. The available guidance does not establish a like-for-like QSV-versus-CPU power result.
