YouTube 24/7 Stream Keeps Disconnecting on a Shared VPS? Check Bandwidth Contention

Shared-VPS contention can cause stream instability, but a disconnect alone does not prove it. Compare sustained outbound capacity during failures with your total stream bitrate and encoder logs.

If a YouTube 24/7 stream repeatedly disconnects from a shared VPS, bandwidth contention is one possible cause—not a diagnosis. Check the VPS’s stable outbound capacity during the failures, compare it with the stream’s total bitrate, and inspect encoder logs before blaming the host. A peak speed-test result alone cannot rule out intermittent congestion.

What a disconnect can—and cannot—tell you

OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If too many frames are dropped, the encoder may disconnect. That points toward the network path between the encoder and ingest server, but it does not identify which part failed: the VPS host, its route, the encoder, or another network component may be involved. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide also lists local software, drivers, and hardware as potential contributors.

Bandwidth contention is plausible because a shared network can limit the capacity available to an individual connection. YouTube cautions that other users sharing a network may limit an individual connection, and says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. The useful question is therefore not “What was the VPS’s best speed-test result?” but “How much stable outbound capacity was available to this stream when it failed?” YouTube’s network guidance

The official guidance reviewed for this article does not quantify how often shared-VPS contention causes continuous-stream disconnects. A lower bitrate that stops the drops supports a capacity or stability hypothesis; it does not prove that the provider oversubscribed its network.

Diagnose the failure in order

1. Separate network drops from rendering or encoding problems

In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frames, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag counters while the stream runs. Record the exact time of each increase and disconnect. Network-dropped frames point toward the connection to the ingest server; rendering or encoding lag points to a different local workload problem. Save the OBS log covering the failure, rather than relying on memory or a screenshot taken afterward. For another encoder, use its equivalent statistics and log.

2. Write down the stream’s actual settings

Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and whether the bitrate is constant or dynamically adjusted. Compare the total video-plus-audio bitrate with the relevant YouTube encoder recommendations. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include:

These are encoder recommendations, not measurements of your scene’s needs or proof of the VPS’s available capacity. YouTube provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265; use the figures for the codec you actually stream with. Include audio when comparing the configured total bitrate against upload capacity.

3. Observe outbound throughput while the stream is running

Check the VPS’s outbound throughput and stability during a representative stream, especially around the hours when failures usually happen. Compare what the instance is actually sustaining with the configured total bitrate. A short test, a peak value, or download speed does not show whether upload capacity remained stable throughout a later failure interval.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between total stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting rule of thumb for bitrate configuration. Treat the latter as a starting point, not a guarantee: a brief speed test is not a measurement of stable capacity during a shared host’s busy period. YouTube network advice · OBS troubleshooting

4. Run a controlled lower-bitrate test

  1. Choose a bitrate low enough to create clear upload headroom. If you are using OBS, change it under Settings > Output > Streaming > Video Bitrate; labels can differ by encoder version.
  2. Keep the codec, destination, and other conditions steady where practical, so the bitrate is the meaningful change.
  3. Test with representative movement and audio, not a static screen alone. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and note any status messages, alongside OBS statistics and timestamps. YouTube recommends representative testing and monitoring stream health.
  4. Compare the failure rate and network-drop statistics with the original run. If the drops stop, that is evidence consistent with a capacity or stability problem; it still does not establish that the VPS provider’s shared network was the cause.

5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, potentially preserving continuity at reduced quality. OBS explicitly cautions that this does not solve the underlying connection issue. If you use it, note when bitrate changes and how much quality is lost; do not treat fewer disconnects as proof that the VPS network has been repaired. OBS explains dynamic bitrate and its trade-offs.

6. Check other relevant causes

Before attributing the problem to shared bandwidth, review the parts of the path and system that apply to your VPS setup. OBS identifies VPN interference, security software, network-optimization software, old network drivers, and faulty network components among possible causes. Desktop-specific advice such as switching from Wi-Fi to a wired connection may not apply to a VPS; focus on checks relevant to the virtual machine, host network, and route to the ingest server.

Ask whether outbound bandwidth is capped or shared, what traffic limits apply, and whether support can check for congestion or instability on the host network and route. Do not assume that a plan described as “dedicated” guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube stream; check its actual terms and network details. If the provider cannot investigate, compare alternatives only using measurable sustained throughput, stated limits, shared-versus-dedicated network terms, route stability, support access to host-side data, and cost. No particular provider’s contention policy is established here.

For a broader cloud-streaming troubleshooting framework, Huawei Cloud’s live-stream guide separates stream-side, playback-side, and origin/CDN issues and recommends checking bandwidth and server resource use. It is general cloud-streaming guidance, not YouTube-specific authority.
