A useful cost estimate starts with outbound bitrate, then adds the instance and any storage, IP, transfer overage, backup, and tax charges. AWS Lightsail’s published $5/month entry bundle is one reference point—not an ARM-versus-x86 comparison or proof that the instance can encode a continuous stream.
What a 24/7 YouTube stream actually costs
Budget for the whole service, not just the advertised virtual machine price. The main variable charges are the instance and outbound data; suitability also depends on whether that machine can encode the video continuously at your chosen settings.
- Instance: the monthly charge for the selected plan, region, and architecture.
- Outbound transfer: the stream sent from the server to YouTube, plus any other egress. Check what the provider includes and how it bills overage.
- Other charges: storage, a public IP if billed separately, backups, and applicable taxes.
- Operations: monitoring and recovery arrangements matter to a 24/7 service even when they do not appear in the headline instance price.
First decide whether the server will encode the video or relay a file that is already encoded. The CPU question is different in each case: encoding requires processing capacity, while a relay still needs a stable process and enough network capacity.
Estimate monthly outbound transfer from bitrate
For a constant bitrate over a 30-day month, the decimal-gigabyte estimate is:

Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 32,400
This converts 30 days of continuous traffic using 3,600 seconds per hour and 8 bits per byte. It is a calculation, not a provider’s billing estimate. At 10 Mbps, it works out to about 324 GB; at 17 Mbps, about 551 GB. Allow for audio and protocol overhead, other traffic, and the provider’s measurement convention.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Those figures provide useful examples for estimating egress; they do not establish that a particular server can encode at those settings. YouTube also says it transcodes the ingested live stream into multiple output formats for viewers (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

A plan listing 1 TB of transfer would not automatically be exhausted by one continuous stream at either example bitrate, before overhead and other traffic. Confirm the plan’s applicable allowance and billing terms rather than treating that calculation as a guarantee.
ARM cloud instance versus x86 VPS: compare equivalent plans
Architecture labels and vCPU counts alone do not say how quickly a server can encode. Compare the actual plans available in the same region and run the same workload on each if you need a performance answer.

AWS advises customers who need highly configurable instances and consistently high CPU performance for tasks such as video encoding to consider EC2 (AWS Lightsail FAQ). That is guidance about when to consider EC2, not proof that every x86 VPS outperforms ARM or that every stream needs EC2.
A dated Lightsail price example—not an architecture verdict
AWS’s Lightsail bundle documentation lists a public IPv4 Linux plan at $5 per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB of memory, 20 GB of storage, and 1 TB of data transfer. AWS’s Lightsail pricing page also lists its entry public IPv4 Linux plan at $5 per month. These are the published figures accessed on October 4, 2026; cloud prices and terms can change. The listed bundle is not identified as an ARM SKU, and these specifications do not establish that it can encode a particular stream sustainably (AWS Lightsail instance bundles; Amazon Lightsail pricing).

Lightsail bundles include a transfer allowance, and AWS documents charges for outbound transfer beyond the applicable monthly allowance. Verify the region and the current bundle terms before using 1 TB as your budget assumption (AWS: Data transfer in Lightsail; AWS Lightsail FAQ).
How to choose without guessing
- Fix the workload. Write down whether you encode or relay, plus resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and hours online. For a true 24/7 stream, use continuous operation in your transfer estimate.
- Calculate egress. Apply the bitrate formula above, then account for audio, overhead, and any other traffic.
- Collect like-for-like plan terms. For candidate ARM and x86 plans, note region, monthly price, CPU and memory, storage, transfer included, and overage policy. Do not compare one provider’s bundled allowance with another’s overage-billed or differently defined transfer without showing the difference.
- Check software and hardware support. Confirm the image, encoder, codec, and any hardware acceleration work on the plan’s architecture.
- Test the actual encode. Run the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder settings for long enough to check sustained performance. Record the measured result and conditions; a short test or a vCPU count is not a continuous-service guarantee.
- Add operational safeguards. Decide how the process restarts after a crash, how you will detect a stalled stream, and how updates and recovery will work. Do not infer an uptime guarantee from CPU architecture.
Use YouTube’s ingest requirements to set the test
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube guidance to configure the encoder and make the ARM-versus-x86 test reproducible (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

The stream key connects your encoder to the YouTube live ingest destination; treat it as a secret and do not publish or share it. A server test should use the same stream settings you intend to run in production, not just a lower-load demonstration.
When the cheaper plan is not the better choice
- Transfer seems cheap, but the allowance is unclear: check how the provider counts outbound traffic and what happens after the allowance. Recalculate for the actual billing period and region.
- The stream stutters or the encoder cannot keep up: reduce the workload only if that matches your required output, or test a larger plan. Do not assume a different architecture will fix it without measuring.
- The file is already encoded: distinguish relaying it from re-encoding it. You still need to validate the software, network, and restart behavior, but CPU encoding capacity may not be the relevant cost driver.
- The instance restarts or the process stops: configure process supervision and monitoring, and test recovery. A low instance price by itself does not provide an operational recovery plan.
- The codec or image is unavailable: verify architecture support before committing. A plan is not suitable merely because its advertised CPU count or price looks favorable.
