You need an encoder or cloud service to send the video to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. A spare PC can work if it and your home upload connection stay available; a VPS moves the encoder offsite but still requires capacity checks, administration and recovery planning.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
A scheduled event creates a viewer-facing watch page that you can promote and share; it does not run an encoder or supply the video feed. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream that carries audio and video to the platform. In practice, YouTube Studio manages the event, while an encoder or managed service sends the ongoing playlist.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. The encoder connects using the event’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to publish to your channel.

VPS or spare PC for a 24/7 stream?
Neither option is universally better. A spare PC is a reasonable starting point if you already have a suitable machine, dependable home upload and the ability to keep the computer available. A VPS can move the encoder away from home, but you must confirm that the specific plan, software and data terms fit your workload. YouTube does not prescribe a minimum PC configuration or a VPS plan for this prerecorded 24/7 use case.

These are operational trade-offs, not measured benchmarks. There is no established head-to-head uptime, monthly-cost, electricity-use or minimum-spec comparison here. Test your actual video, bitrate and encoder settings before committing to a paid hosting plan.

How to choose without guessing
- Estimate the actual workload. Decide what video you will play, the output resolution and frame rate, and the encoder settings. The sources do not establish a universal minimum specification for this workload.
- Check the connection and capacity. For a spare PC, assess whether your home upload connection can sustain the chosen outgoing stream. For a VPS, confirm the plan’s sustained resources, operating system and outbound transfer terms directly with the provider.
- List the complete recurring and one-time costs. Include equipment purchases or replacement, power and home connectivity for a PC; hosting, possible data charges, storage and administration for a VPS. Add any software or managed-service subscription relevant to your option.
- Plan for failure before going live. Decide how the encoder starts after a restart, how you will notice a dropped feed and what you will do to restore it. A remote server changes where the work runs; it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
- Run a practical test. Use the intended video and settings, monitor the stream and test recovery after a process restart or network interruption. Do this before relying on the setup for a continuous channel.
Scheduling, stream keys and archives
Use YouTube Studio to schedule an event when a shareable, promoted watch page is useful. Starting the encoder or managed service remains a separate step: it must send the feed using the server URL and stream key associated with the event. Keep the key out of public posts and limit access to people who need to operate the stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If an archive matters, plan around that limitation rather than assuming a 24/7 event will produce one complete recording. See YouTube’s encoder and live-stream guidance.

Do you need HLS?
No: a playlist creator does not have to choose HLS simply because the stream runs continuously. YouTube lists encoder options, and its HLS instructions apply when you specifically select HLS. For that protocol, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow the protocol-specific requirements only if your encoder is configured to send HLS; see YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- The scheduled page exists, but no video appears: Scheduling does not start the encoder. Start the encoder or cloud service and verify it is using the correct event server URL and stream key.
- The stream stops after the computer is left unattended: Check sleep and power settings, encoder process status, computer power and home connectivity. Configure startup and restart behavior, then test it.
- A VPS cannot sustain the stream as expected: Recheck the selected plan’s sustained resources, operating system and outbound data terms with the provider. Confirm that your software and chosen video settings fit the environment.
- The stream drops and does not resume: Check the connection and encoder process, then follow your planned recovery procedure. Test recovery after a network interruption and restart rather than assuming it will happen automatically.
- You expected a complete archive of a 24/7 broadcast: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a complete archive for one longer continuous stream.
