1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor arranging a basic rotation of prerecorded videos, OBS is easier for most people: its VLC video source offers visible playlist, loop, and shuffle controls. FFmpeg suits operators comfortable with command-line settings and scripting. But neither tool schedules the YouTube event itself: create and schedule that in YouTube Studio, then connect your encoder.
What “schedule” means for a 24/7 stream
There are two separate tasks: deciding what plays and when, and scheduling the live event. OBS or FFmpeg supplies the audio-video feed to YouTube as an encoder. YouTube Studio is where you create the event, set its title and privacy, choose its date and time, and promote it. You configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the connection process.
For recurring events, YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the live broadcast (the event) from the live stream (the audio-video feed); recurring broadcasts can share stream settings. That distinction reinforces the practical rule: manage the event in YouTube, and manage playback in your encoder.
OBS vs. FFmpeg at a glance
| Question | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist setup | Visual controls through the VLC video source: set playlist order, shuffle, or loop. | Command-line options can loop input, but the operator configures the pipeline. |
| Best fit | People who prefer a graphical interface and straightforward local playlist rotation. | People familiar with command-line media tools who want repeatable, scriptable configuration. |
| YouTube event scheduling | Schedule in YouTube Studio; OBS sends the feed. | Schedule in YouTube Studio; FFmpeg sends the feed. |
| Reliability comparison | Not established: the documented features do not provide a side-by-side reliability test or guarantee uninterrupted operation. | |
Set up a playlist rotation in OBS
OBS’s playlist workflow described here uses its VLC video source, so install VLC first. The exact labels may vary by OBS version; consult the OBS media sources guide if your interface differs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install VLC, then open OBS and create or select the scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source.
- In that source’s properties, add the local video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want.
- Choose whether to enable looping or shuffle. Loop repeats the playlist; shuffle changes the order of playback.
- Preview the scene and check that video and audio play as expected before connecting it to YouTube.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event. Copy the event’s stream URL and key into OBS’s stream settings, following the values and ingest instructions Studio provides.
- Start the encoder when appropriate for the scheduled event, and confirm in Studio that YouTube is receiving the feed before the event begins.
Build a looping input with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a better fit when you are comfortable composing and maintaining a command-line pipeline. Its documentation describes -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping for an input, and -re as reading at native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). See the FFmpeg documentation for the version and build you use.
- Prepare the prerecorded media and decide how the playlist should advance. A single input can be looped with
-stream_loop -1; a multi-file rotation requires you to define how inputs are joined or sequenced for your particular formats and workflow. - Use
-re(or its documented equivalent,-readrate 1) when you need file input read at real-time speed rather than as fast as the machine can process it. - Configure the output for the ingest method and settings shown for your scheduled stream in YouTube Studio. Do not assume every protocol, media format, or encoder mode is interchangeable.
- Supply the stream URL and key from the YouTube event, taking care not to expose the key in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
- Test the command with your actual media and check YouTube Studio for a received signal before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- For unattended operation, decide how the process will be supervised and restarted if it exits, and how you will notice a loss of network or host availability. The looping options are building blocks, not a complete scheduler or recovery system.
Choose the ingest settings YouTube gives your event
YouTube supports more than one ingest approach. Its HLS guidance lists OBS as a compatible encoder and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use the protocol and settings presented for your scheduled stream instead of assuming instructions for one ingest method apply to another.

Account for long-stream archiving and uptime
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise that a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived as one video. If a single archive matters, plan around the stated limit and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archival outcome.
A 24/7 rotation also depends on the computer or host, the encoder process, and the network staying available. Neither OBS nor FFmpeg’s documented playlist or loop controls establish uninterrupted operation. For a self-hosted setup, arrange process monitoring and a recovery plan appropriate to your system; a scheduled event and a looping input alone do not keep a failed host online.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- OBS does not offer a VLC video source: VLC is required for this source. Install it, then restart or reopen OBS and check the Sources menu again.
- The OBS playlist stops after one pass: Open the VLC source properties and check the loop setting. Confirm the playlist contains the intended files.
- FFmpeg plays files too quickly: For file input that should be paced in real time, check that the command uses
-reor-readrate 1as appropriate. - YouTube Studio shows no incoming feed: Verify that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, that it is running, and that its ingest protocol matches the event’s instructions.
- A stream drops and does not resume: A playlist loop does not supervise a crashed process or restore a lost connection. Check host and network availability, then use your planned restart or recovery procedure.
- You need a single archive from a very long broadcast: Do not infer that YouTube will archive a stream of 12 hours or longer as one video from its statement about streams under 12 hours; verify current platform behavior and consider how you will preserve the source recording.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before putting prerecorded material into a continuous broadcast, make sure you have the rights needed to stream it and that the content complies with YouTube’s rules. A technically successful loop does not establish permission to use the music, footage, or other material in the files. For documentaries, check licenses and any restrictions on distribution or rebroadcast, including music and third-party clips.
Also assess whether the channel’s overall programming complies with YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies if monetization is relevant. A 24/7 format or playlist does not, by itself, establish eligibility. Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance before streaming.
