YouPorn launched Swyp on February 25, 2020, as a mobile-first web app for discovering adult videos through TikTok-like gestures. Videos previewed automatically, vertical swipes moved through the feed, and a left swipe opened the selected video in full view. YouPorn said machine-learning systems used viewing, scrolling and swiping behavior to refine recommendations.
The important qualification is that Swyp was a browser-based progressive web app (PWA), not a conventional iOS App Store or Google Play download. Launch coverage confirms the product and its design, but does not document the model behind its recommendations or establish that Swyp remains a separate product in 2026.
What YouPorn actually launched
VentureBeat reported the launch at 6:04 a.m. PT on February 25, 2020. YouPorn called the product “Swyp” (also styled “SWYP”), positioning it as a mobile discovery experience inspired by the interaction pattern popularized by TikTok—not as a social network or a direct TikTok clone. VentureBeat’s launch report is the strongest contemporary account.
The goal was to replace a thumbnail-heavy browsing grid with a one-video-at-a-time feed. That reduced the number of taps between opening the service and seeing a playable recommendation.

How the reported interface worked
- Automatic preview: A video appeared in a simplified, full-screen-oriented view and began previewing automatically.
- Vertical navigation: Swiping up or down moved to the next or previous preview.
- Full playback: Swiping left opened the chosen item as a full video, which also played automatically.
- Orientation choices: Launch coverage described both portrait and landscape viewing.
- Home-screen access: Users could reportedly add the web app to an iOS or Android phone’s home screen, creating an app-like icon without installing from an official store.
These are launch-period descriptions, not a current hands-on test. Playback controls, browser compatibility and the availability of the installation prompt may differ by device, browser, country and site policy.
“Learns when you swipe” — what that means
YouPorn described Swyp as using machine learning to adapt recommendations to an individual viewer. The reported signals included what people watched and how they scrolled or swiped. YouPorn also said personalization could improve within Swyp and across the wider YouPorn site. WeRSM reported that signing in or registering was needed to save preferences. WeRSM’s account provides that additional detail.
The evidence supports a narrower, more precise interpretation: Swyp used interaction signals to adjust which videos appeared next. It does not establish that every swipe was a simple like or dislike, that the system used a particular neural-network or collaborative-filtering model, or that recommendations were measurably more accurate than YouPorn’s earlier system.
What the launch reports do not disclose
- Which exact events were logged and how they were weighted.
- Whether interaction histories were tied to an identifiable account in every use case.
- Retention periods, deletion or reset controls, and treatment of private browsing.
- Whether location, cookies, device identifiers or advertising data affected ranking.
- Accuracy, diversity, safety or bias measurements.
A swipe can be an ambiguous signal: a viewer may be skipping, reacting to a slow load, exploring, or touching the screen accidentally. Autoplay exposure can also shape behavior independently of a stable preference.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy it was delivered as a PWA
Contemporary coverage attributed the browser approach to Apple and Google restrictions on pornographic apps. A PWA let YouPorn provide a home-screen shortcut and some app-like behavior while relying on the mobile browser rather than app-store distribution. That is a distribution choice, not proof that Swyp had the same capabilities as a native application.
PWAs can differ from native apps in caching, offline behavior, notifications, fullscreen playback, media controls and installation prompts. The 2020 reports do not provide a compatibility matrix or confirm service-worker, offline or push-notification features. Network conditions, operating-system policies and regional access rules could therefore change the experience.

How Swyp fit YouPorn’s recommendation strategy
VentureBeat noted that YouPorn had introduced personalized weekly video playlists powered by machine learning in 2018. The same report referenced broader machine-learning work elsewhere in the company’s portfolio, including automated content tagging at Pornhub. Swyp can therefore be understood as a combination of four existing technology ideas:
- a short-form, gesture-driven feed;
- automatic playback to reduce friction;
- behavioral recommendation personalization; and
- mobile-web delivery that avoided dependence on adult-content app-store listings.
The available sources do not show that Swyp shared a particular model or infrastructure with those other systems.
Trade-offs for users
| Potential benefit | Corresponding trade-off |
|---|---|
| Rapid discovery with fewer taps | Autoplay can use more mobile data and battery. |
| A familiar vertical-feed gesture | Fast swiping may encourage shallow browsing with little context. |
| One-video-at-a-time presentation | Users see less information about alternatives before choosing. |
| Personalized recommendations | Behavioral history may reinforce a narrow set of viewing patterns. |
| Home-screen shortcut | Browser and operating-system limitations remain. |
Because the subject matter is sensitive, an account-linked preference history also raises ordinary privacy questions: who can access the account, what appears in browser history, and whether a shared device exposes the home-screen icon or recommendations.

Swyp was intended for adults and contained explicit sexual material. Access can depend on geography, local regulation, age-verification requirements, network filtering and registration policy. A current visit to YouPorn’s homepage confirms that the site exists, but displays a region-specific notice that new account registration is not accepted everywhere.
The launch reports do not verify a current Swyp endpoint, current feature set, or continued operation as a distinct service as of August 2026. They also do not establish anonymous personalization, cross-service data sharing details, or how users could erase recommendation history. Those points should not be inferred from the word “machine learning.”
What is verified—and what remains unknown
| Established by launch coverage | Not established by the cited sources |
|---|---|
| Launch on February 25, 2020 | Long-term adoption, retention or revenue |
| Browser/PWA delivery with home-screen installation | A native App Store or Google Play release |
| Vertical preview navigation and left-swipe full playback | Current availability in 2026 |
| Machine-learning personalization claims | Model architecture, training data or ranking formula |
| Reported login or signup requirement to save preferences | Retention, deletion and account-level privacy controls |
Bottom line
Swyp was best understood as a PWA-driven recommendation experiment: YouPorn applied a TikTok-like gesture feed, autoplay and behavioral personalization to mobile adult-video discovery. The launch itself is well documented; the technical workings, measurable performance and present-day availability are not.
