Young Sheldon Series Finale Review: The Coopers Balance Comedy and Drama in an Emotional Send-Off

Young Sheldon’s two-part finale centers George’s death and the Cooper family’s grief, then uses Sheldon’s memoir and a Caltech return to connect the prequel to The Big Bang Theory.

Spoilers for both parts of the series finale, “Funeral” and “Memoir.” The two-part ending, broadcast May 16, 2024, gives George Cooper’s death room to change the family’s familiar rhythms before using Sheldon’s memoir and a return to Caltech to connect the prequel to the life seen in The Big Bang Theory. Its strongest choice is keeping the Coopers—not the returning franchise characters—at the center of the farewell.

“Funeral” makes grief the story, not a detour from it

The first half-hour is set largely around George’s funeral, turning the series’ domestic comedy into a family drama without pretending that everyone grieves in the same way. Missy’s anger and Sheldon’s inward response give the loss distinct shapes: one is outward and volatile, the other private and difficult to read. Mary, Georgie, and Meemaw also have to face the absence in their own ways, rather than simply echoing one another’s sorrow.

That difference is the episode’s emotional engine. The family’s reactions make George’s death feel like a rupture in a household, not merely a plot event required to explain Sheldon’s future. The humor can still exist around the funeral and its aftermath, but it sits beside grief rather than cancelling it. That balance makes the comedy feel newly fragile, which is more affecting than trying to turn every scene solemn.

TVLine’s pre-finale cast preview described the family’s varied responses, including Missy’s anger and Sheldon’s inwardness; those remarks are advance descriptions, not a substitute for the episode itself. In the finished story, the focus remains on how the Coopers experience the loss.

“Memoir” turns Sheldon’s voice into a bridge to the future

The second half shifts from the immediate family crisis to an older Sheldon writing a memoir. The frame gives a story told through Sheldon’s narration across the prequel a clear endpoint: the voice that has accompanied the audience is revealed as a writer looking back on the family and childhood that formed him. It is an effective idea for closure, though the move from funeral grief into a future-set frame can feel abrupt. The question is whether the shift deepens the goodbye or makes the final chapter feel like a franchise epilogue.

Adult Sheldon and Amy return as parents. Their son Leonard is mentioned, while the daughter’s name is not disclosed in the finale report. The scenes offer a glimpse of the life Sheldon built after The Big Bang Theory without making the prequel’s ending depend on a long reunion or a roll call of familiar faces.

The closing movement takes Sheldon to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where a professor played by David Saltzberg approaches him. Saltzberg served as scientific consultant on both shows, making the appearance a neat connection between the series and the academic world that has defined Sheldon’s adult life. More importantly, the scene points him toward the next stage of his story: the child who began this series is moving toward the place where the audience first knew him as an adult.

The returning characters enrich the farewell without taking it over

Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik reprise Sheldon and Amy, bringing the original series into the future frame. Their return rewards viewers invested in the larger story, but it does not displace the central family drama. Executive producer Steve Holland told TVLine: “We were also trying to be really careful not to let them overwhelm the finale because, at the end of the day, this was still a Young Sheldon finale and this still had to be about the Cooper family.” The finished structure reflects that priority: the returns provide context and continuity, while George’s death and its impact remain the emotional center.

That restraint is a strength, even if viewers may differ on how smoothly the pieces fit. The memoir, adult Sheldon and Amy, and the Caltech scene make the ending legible as a link to The Big Bang Theory; they also risk pulling attention away from the more intimate farewell to the Coopers. For this reviewer, the balance largely works because the callbacks arrive after the funeral story has established what the ending is really about.

Does the finale work as a send-off?

“Funeral” and “Memoir” make a deliberate trade: the first gives the family’s loss specificity, while the second supplies a frame that carries Sheldon toward his known future. The transition is not perfectly seamless, and “Memoir” sometimes reads like a bridge between series as much as a last chapter of this one. But the finale’s most affecting material belongs to the Coopers, and its final gestures toward Sheldon’s future extend rather than replace that family story. It closes the prequel by showing how a childhood loss can remain part of the person who goes on to narrate it.
