He said he felt empathy for the cast and crew and for viewers—not a desire to turn the moment into a conflict.
What Michael Fishman said after The Conners ended
In a Threads post following the finale, Fishman thanked people who supported the series and praised the contributions of people both in front of and behind the camera. CBR’s April 24, 2025 report quoted him saying, “I want to thank all of you who supported our work. It was an honor to share a set with some of the most talented people in history in front of and behind the camera. I’m thankful for every participant. We celebrate all the pieces of the puzzle, seen or not.” The message focused on appreciation for the many people who helped make the show.
Fishman also shared a separate reflection on Instagram. Just Jared reported that his caption read: “Thankful for the Gift of Grief, that it happened, that I got to share the experience, forever changed by it. To everyone who build our shows and all those who empowered it”.
How he addressed his absence from the finale
Fishman was not in The Conners finale. After receiving requests for a reaction, he addressed the attention in an Instagram video, as reported by Deadline on April 30, 2025: “People seem to want to have there be some kind of conflict or controversy, especially on my part. The reality is, all I really have is empathy and understanding for all of the people on set, and all of our audience that’s grieving.”

Fishman played D.J. Conner on all ten seasons of Roseanne and returned for the first four seasons of its spinoff, The Conners, before departing ahead of Season 5, according to Deadline and Just Jared. His farewell messages recognized a series that involved more people than those seen on screen—a fitting note for a show about a working-class family navigating parenthood, relationships, money pressures, aging and in-laws.
