What did the creator say about her absence?
Hudnut said Monica was not available while the creative team was developing Kayce’s story. As quoted by CinemaBlend from The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “Then, truthfully, as we were trying to figure it out, Monica was not one of the ingredients that was available to me.”
He described the decision as a way to handle the character’s absence “in the least exploitive way,” rather than as a choice to kill Monica simply to give Kayce a badge and a revenge motive. “It was important to me to honor her death and give it a little more meaning,” Hudnut said. Hudnut also said Kayce is behind his son Tate in processing the loss, making grief part of the story rather than a passing explanation for Kayce’s new job.
