The Dutton family’s in-universe story runs 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone. The shows were released in a different order: Yellowstone (2018) → 1883 (2021) → 1923 (2022). Paramount’s franchise guide presents both sequences, so the right order depends on whether you want the story chronology or the order audiences first saw the series.
Spoiler notice: The family connections below, including a reveal from the 1923 finale, explain how the prequels lead into Yellowstone.
Yellowstone shows in chronological order
- 1883 — the Dutton family’s westward journey and settlement in Montana.
- 1923 — a later generation faces life at the Montana ranch.
- Yellowstone — the modern-era story of John Dutton and his children.
This sequence follows the fictional chronology described in Paramount’s franchise guide. It does not mean each series covers only the named year: the years identify the period in which each chapter is set.
How the Dutton family connects across the series
1883: the journey to Montana
James and Margaret Dutton travel west from Texas with their children, joining a caravan led by Shea Brennan and Thomas. They initially aim for Oregon, but settle in Montana at the site of the future Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Paramount describes their daughter Elsa as 18 and their son John as five during this chapter.
#1 Best Overall
The series’ official episode guide lists 10 story episodes. They trace the journey, its river crossings and dangers, and the decisions James and Margaret face at the end. The episode count describes the series, not ten separate years of the family’s chronology.
1923: the next generation at the ranch
By 1923, James’s brother Jacob and Jacob’s wife, Cara, are based at the Montana ranch. James and Margaret’s son Spencer—born after the events of 1883—was raised by Jacob and Cara. The family also includes John Dutton Sr., another son of James and Margaret, and Jack, John Sr.’s son.

The most important link to Yellowstone comes at the end of 1923: Spencer and Alexandra welcome John Dutton II. Paramount’s guide identifies John II as the future father of John Dutton III, the central John Dutton in Yellowstone. Paramount Global Content lists 1923 as 16 episodes across two seasons; see its series listing.
Yellowstone: the modern-era Duttons
Paramount describes Yellowstone as a modern-day Western set in the 21st century. Its John Dutton—commonly known as John Dutton III—is James Dutton’s great-grandson and Spencer Dutton’s grandson. He controls the ranch with his children Lee, Beth, Kayce, and Jamie. Paramount says the original series ran for five seasons.

Chronological order versus release order
| Order | Sequence | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| In-universe chronology | 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone | You want to follow the family story from its earliest chapter forward. |
| Original release order | Yellowstone (2018) → 1883 (2021) → 1923 (2022) | You want to follow the order in which audiences first encountered the series. |
Paramount presents both orders; neither is a universally required way to watch. The chronological order makes the generational story easier to follow from its beginnings. Release order lets you meet the modern Duttons first, as the original audience did, then move back to the prequels.
Where to watch
In the U.S. context of Paramount’s viewing guide, 1883 and 1923 are available on Paramount+, while Yellowstone is shown on Paramount Network when scheduled and streams on Peacock.
