Spoiler warning: this article covers the Season 5 Part 2 premiere, including how John Dutton’s death is revealed. Keep reading only if you are caught up.
The short answer: John Dutton is dead when Part 2 begins, and the premiere shows that his death was a murder staged as a suicide. Kevin Costner has publicly said he will not continue into Season 5B or later seasons. The premiere drew a large audience by the measure TV Insider reported, but the reporting available does not establish whether viewers were satisfied with the ending. Those are three separate questions, and this article takes them in that order.
When Part 2 premiered and why it took so long
- Season 5 Part 1 premiered in November 2022.
- In November 2023, the Associated Press reported that the final installment had been delayed until November 2024 because of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes.
- Paramount announced in July 2024 that the Part 2 premiere would air on November 10, 2024, with a special CBS airing. The announcement also listed different international Paramount+ dates, so a US broadcast date should not be assumed to apply everywhere.
- ABC News described the premiere as the first new episode in nearly two years. That describes the gap between new installments. It does not mean production was paused for that entire period.
What the premiere reveals about John Dutton (spoilers)
The apparent suicide
Early in the episode, John is confirmed dead. A gun and blood at the governor’s mansion initially suggest suicide, according to ABC News’s account of the premiere.
The flashback that changes the story
A later flashback establishes that John was murdered. Sarah Atwood hired professional hitmen and arranged for the death to be staged as a suicide.

Jamie’s role
Jamie had discussed a plan with Sarah earlier, and that earlier conversation gave her the idea. ABC reports that he was tearful when he learned John was dead, and that when Sarah then told him she had acted, he seemed shocked. The episode separates that earlier discussion from Sarah’s execution of the plan. The reporting does not support a claim that Jamie ordered the killing.
What it sets up
John’s death turns the family conflict into a direct confrontation among Jamie, Beth, and Kayce.

Why Kevin Costner left Yellowstone
Costner’s own public statement is the most direct evidence. In his announcement, as quoted by CBS News, he said: “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future.”
CBS News also reported that he said: “I did everything that I was contracted to do with ‘Yellowstone.’” He added that he would consider returning if he liked the story.

What is not established
- The sources do not establish scheduling disputes, or his separate work on the Horizon project, as the sole cause of his exit. Those points would need separate sourcing before they could be stated as fact.
- Speculation about behind-the-scenes conflict is not documented in the reporting cited here. Treat it as unconfirmed.
- Costner’s statements describe his own position. They do not settle any question about negotiations.
Was John Dutton’s death always planned?
Christina Voros, executive producer and director, addressed this in a December 2024 interview with TV Insider. Her answer separates two things:
- The destination. Voros said: “The ‘what’ of the end of the season was always planned.” She said John’s death was intended to be part of the final season whether or not Costner was involved.
- The route. She said: “The ‘how’ may have needed to be adjusted.” She indicated that the specifics of how Costner’s departure changed the plan would have to come from series creator Taylor Sheridan. His account is not part of the reporting cited here.
How to read the 16.4 million premiere figure
TV Insider reported that the Part 2 premiere drew 16.4 million viewers, compared with 15.9 million for the Part 1 premiere. The figure is a premiere-night total, not the audience for a single airing. It uses VideoAmp projected Total Persons/Live+SD gross viewership and includes the premiere plus encore airings across Paramount Network and eight other networks, including CBS.

| Season 5 premiere | Reported viewers | Scope of the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 (November 2022) | 15.9 million | Figure as reported in the same TV Insider article, using the same named methodology |
| Part 2 (November 10, 2024) | 16.4 million | Premiere-night total across Paramount Network, eight other networks including CBS, VideoAmp projected Total Persons/Live+SD gross viewership |
The table compares two premiere totals. It cannot tell you how many people watched the episode in full, how many watched live, or how many liked it. Those are different measures, and the table below keeps them apart.
| Measure | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Costner’s stated reason for leaving | His own account of his contract and his future plans | Whether other factors, such as disputes, played a role |
| Premiere-night reach | Projected viewership across the premiere and encore airings | Whether viewers were satisfied with the ending |
| Audience satisfaction | Only varied commentary, such as Voros’s description | A representative measure; the reporting cited here includes no survey |
The fan backlash: varied reaction, not a measured verdict
Voros described the response as: “the fact that the response to the season has been so varied and so strong from all of these different perspectives.” In her account, some viewers were thrilled and others were devastated.
Online discussions focus on two criticisms: John Dutton’s abrupt, off-screen death, and the season’s pacing. Individual posts and votes are anecdotal and self-selected, so they show that the criticism exists, not how widely it is held.
Because no representative audience survey appears in the reporting cited here, the size of the split cannot be measured. A reasonable reading, though not one a survey confirms, is that the division follows what viewers expected from John’s exit and from the final stretch of the show.
